Default Wiring Harness For 1989

Hi guys I picked up a sony xplod mp3 deck just today and well i took out the old deck and have started installing my new speakers (got the rear ones installed already) anyhow how do i know what color wire is what in the dash for the deck?? i mean i used my haynes manual and well i know what some of the wires are but some of them are not even there in the diagram yet i got them there in the dash. also isn't there just some sort of wiring harness made for the vettes audio wiring that i can use instead of having to cut and splice the connections??

thanks

Well before I go into detail.. do you have the bose system?

If you have the Bose system.. run all new speaker wires..

If you have the standard non-bose radio.. most Audio stores that do installs sell the adapter harness that plugs in to the stock harness and then you just wire to that..
you can also use the adapter for radio power and the antenna lead if you have the Bose

EDIT= if you need the Adapter harness and cannot find one.. I think I have a spare

Run new wires. Use 14 gauge speaker wire. Use the copper color, as positive, silver as negative. This way you don't need to worry about disarming the amps, which wire is what, etc. Makes life easy and running the wires should take 20 minutes a side. Well worth the time and effort, especially since you will now have better wire. :cheers:

ok heres a funny story about the speakers and i won't be long with it.
i've got bose but i've got only the rear speakers and not even cut outs for speakers in the doors and its that way cuz of the doors being replaced by the previous owner or some other booha like that.

anyways i've got new speakers so i did rewire i've only installed the rear 6x9's and have the wire in the area where the deck is going to be. i haven't cut out holes in the door panel yet for the 6.5" cuz well one i dunno how to get the panels off and two i dunno if 6.5" will fit in the cavity in the door thus i haven't even opened the package for the 6.5" but the rears are in and wired.

i've got that new sony mp3 xplod deck the CDX-MP450X my buddy and i got to work on it tonight we cut the wires and hooked them to the deck we have cut three wires from the harnesses in the vette....... Yellow, Brown and Pink but i had two pinks....... ones lighter and ones darker....... we cut both and tried and wired them and heres the results i got.......... the CD deck won't light up but i hear the rear speakers beep when i push the on button but my friend who has the identical deck says that that beep sequence is the one that indicates that the system has been shut off...... so we dunno whats going on so we spent a few hours at it and same result each time so we gave up and disconnected the wires to the deck just in case and electrical taped them and put the dash back together to look at it tomorrow. so far noone in British Columbia has the d@mn wiring harness for the corvette not even the stereo shops or the corvette shops they all say the same thing, "The harness is hard to get" dammit Ecklers has it but i don't wanna buy from them cuz well one i hear they got a bad reputation and next shipping from florida to vancouver is just outrageous! i think its like 15 bucks USD! and the wires are 12 bucks USD thats too much for a set of wires that make the job easier.

jeff if you got a spare wiring harness how much do you want for it ?? and any idea how it can be sent to me without it being so expensive i hear USPS always charges alot just to have stuff shipped across the border. I remember once i had books shipped to me and the seller told me it'd be almost 30 dollars US to ship them to vancouver when i asked how much to ship to everett washington he said only 8 bucks US! or 4 US for book rate well i went with book rate and had a friend who visits everett pick them up for me. oh well yeah i'm just not in the mood to spend outrageous sums of money to have a set of wire harnesses shipped to me.... they're wires for crying out! you can put em in an envelope and send em over.......

oh yeah and since i only know ecklers has this harness where else can i check?? i checked at http://www.mmxpress.com/
but they only give the harness with an order so i got nothing to order and this sucks bad :( i can't believe no stereo shops here have the harness grrrr

well if you can let me know where else to get the harness please don't leave me in the dark.

thanks for any input on this

One of the pink wires raises your antenna, the other powers up your bose amps. if you are using the bose amps still connect both pink wires to the power antenna output of the head unit (might also be called "amp turn on").

the black plug from your stock radio should have the following colors:
black=ground
yellow=ignition
grey=dimmer
pink=power antenna

you should also have a small plug with 2 wires in it, brown and orange. the orange wire is for constant 12 volts.

this should be all you need for powering your sony. If you need wire colors for the speakers let me know, but I would run new wires!

alright cool joe thanks for this info! we've been trying to hook one of the pink wires and the brown and yellow...

the haynes guide doesn't even have an orange wire on the diagram! ARGH!

so i need the orange wire for power! and i need the grey one?? or the yellow? or the brown?? ....... we already have the black one attached to the black one on the sony's wire harness thingy...... ok so i just need to hook up the orange one to the main power wire for the sony's wiring harness???? and it should power up???........ man why doesn't the haynes guide show this stuff on the diagrams i went hack crazy cutting up and stripping wires like nutzo and all i needed was the orange one i didn't touch cuz i didn't know what it was for all thanks to haynes....... jeez.......

oh yeah i don't have a powered antenna cuz the previous owner was smart and replaced it with one of the non powered ones its like a foot long and its kinda annoying but i haven't found a used antenna for my car yet. and as for the amps...... i took those crappy bose speakres in the rear and use em as my foot rests or door stoppers now and put in new clarion 6x9's and will get to work on the 6.5" clarions for the doors soon but i gotta get the door panel off and cut a hole out of the door carpet to put a 6.5" through the doors on my car were replaced and well there are no speakers in the front doors not even cut outs and theres nothing in the dash area so well whoever had the car before me really raped this poor girl :(

yeah so ehn i need orange wire only...... man i still wish i had the wiring harness oh well. atleast i can have cd's and mp3 cd's playing in the vette by midday tomorrow, woohoo!

thanks so much joe i appreciate this.

Sounds like you got the wiring colors set.. if not I will try to look tonight..

Send me an email around 3:30pm or later CST and I will check when I get home.. This way I remember..

As for the doors.. you will have plenty of room for the 6.5" in the doors.. to get tha panels off.. there are 3 or 4 screws near the inside door handle, one on the outer edge at the back of the panel (seen with the door open) Then 6 or so screws that wrap around the bottom of the panel hidden in the carpet. I may not have the #'s complete since I am going from memory.

that should get the panel free from the door. Hope this helps
Jeff
