"CD Mech Error": Am I in trouble?
Hey everyone:
I have a 2005 C6 with Bose. Coming back from the Mid-Ohio race on Sunday, the CD player, while changing from one CD to the next, suddenly stopped playing and displayed "CD Mech Error". It now refuses to play, refuses to eject, and refuses to accept any new CDs. I've seen post with this problem that talk about a new CD player and removal of the console, etc.
Is this a major problem, or just an good excuse to upgrade the system?
Thanks

The '05's are just coming out of warranty now so there haven't been a lot of reports of problems you can fix yourself with the stereos because guys just haul 'em to the dealer and they usually swap them out. So that means while I haven't seen anybody talking about it doesn't mean it's uncommon. My guess? It's pretty big trouble and there's no simple fix.
You likely could find a used factory head for sale here on the forum. Lots of guys have pulled theirs to put in aftermarket and quite a few have pulled them to put in the '08-up heads that have the 1/8" jack for their iPods. That might be the least expensive way to go, though you'd still have to deal with dealer re-programming.
The alternative is upgrade to an aftermarket head. There are some great double-din units out there that look great in the dash and work & sound better than the factory units. You can get DVD units for around $500 or so, and then NAV units in the $700-1500 range.

I'm afraid I have even more trouble now. I was telling a friend of mine, an electrical engineer, about my CD problem, and he suggested pulling and replacing the radio fuse to allow the cd/radio to reset. I did that, and now nothing works, not the radio, the clock, nothing. Before I pulled the fuse and put it back, at least the radio and the clock worked.
Now what?

Now what?I would also pull that fuse again and check it to see if it popped when you put it back in. It could be you need to replace that fuse.
Disconnect the negative cable from the battery under the hood. Let the car sit for a few minutes with it disconnected, then reconnect it. Have your fob handy, sometimes the car doesn't like that and the alarm will fire off, just press unlock.
As I stated above, you'll have to re-index the windows. With the doors closed put them all the way up, then release the buttons, pull them up together, hold two seconds release and repeat.
And check that fuse for continuity. If you're not sure about that, take it to an auto parts store they can check it and replace if needed.
