I remember in the 80's that equalizer booster were the main thing instead of amps. They had the toggles to adjust the sound of the music and some had a sort of lighted bar lines that beat to the music. Are these out of style now because of better amp? Can you still get them with decent amps and good sound???

Most of the equalization has gone digital these days, so you don't see the big analog EQ's very often. Some amps even have this stuff integrated. In my Vette I run a Zapco DC1000.4 which has a DSP onboard. I can hook my laptop up to it via USB and set crossovers, delays, EQ, etc. In my truck I have an Alpine PXA-H701 processor. It provides the same sort of functionality just outboard from the amp. So it's available, just different these days.
in short though; no, you can not use those booster/eq's instead of amps for better soundquality. for the best soundquality you actually need both in some form as komoman stated. Some higher end head units have the eq integrated (pioneer deh-800p i think thats the model #, is a good budget minded high end head unit with a lot of processing/tuning power)
I remember when I was younger... I had a power booster EQ that rocked all kinds of *****! Adding a Kraco power booster between it and my speakers would make it TWICE as loud, right?
My, how things have changed.
You can still get the power booster EQ's at places like Parts Express if you are on a tight budget and need 'better than stock' HU sound.
But make no mistake... there is a really big difference between this:
I always like to intergrate some OLD SCHOOL when posible. I can afford things now that I could'nt when I was younger and I think some of them are still cool...
