Default dummies guide to setting a parametric EQ?

i can set a standard EQ no problem, but ive never touched a parametric before.

i didnt know this before i bought the speakers, but the infinities are absolutely brutal for treble. im trying to knock off the treble, and boost the bass slightly.

Parametric EQs aren't for dummies.

MHO they are used best in conjunction with tools such as a real time analyzer, or a really good set of ears that "know" what the problems sound like..

Generally you can cut 3khz fairly wide and kill a lot of harshness.

ok, simple question about them then.

on say, channel 5, i can select a frequency from anything from 8khz to 20 khz. if i set it to 8khz, does that affect everything from 8khz upto 20? or does it just affect the 8 range? im trying to bring the entire treble line down, cause really, its painful with the stereo cranked up.

IT "Centers" at 8khz. Which means it will effect frequencies + or - X from 8khz. This is effected by the "Q" adjustment. (Wider, or narrower.) A good parametric can bring down a massive range, or fire with sniper accuracy.

spent a couple hours on it today and got things set to how i like it. its still a little on the high side, but i cant knock it down any further. and i got the little boost in bass i was looking for too.

also spent some time toying with the time correction, and i must say, after setting that up its made a world of difference.

everything sounds very nice now, but in hind sight, i really wish i moved to a decent set of components and a small sub, rather then 4x6s and 6x9s.

A little tuning goes a long way. My pioneer speakers are intolerable without massive EQ work.

The thing about a parametric is that you can tune into a very narrow frequency and either BOOST or TURN DOWN that frequency bandwidth. For instance, a bass drum fundamental is between 50hz and 150hz. Turn up that frequency and the bass drum will go up. Between 200hz and 500hz are the tom tom drums. If you turn that up they will jump out of the mix.

The dangerous thing with parametric eq is that a sudden bass sound may have such high transients (changes too quickly) that it can blow your speaker out. I did this once with some cheap speakers. LESS IS MORE with parametrics. You may only need a FEW DB of volume change for each band.

Agreed. Also, keep in mind, its safer to cut than to boost! I'd rather cut everything by 2db than boost bass frequencies by 2db. Going back to my Pioneer example, I cut many frequencies. The speakers now have considerably more midbass. (not really, but you can hear it a lot easier.)

ill tell ya what, these infinities are absolute crap. ive got everything from about 6khz up cut by 6db, the max i can cut it by, and its still to much for me. i will turn the bass down a bit, since i think ive at +3 or so.

I don't think they are very good speakers, either... sometimes install locations help, sometimes no.

ya, if its not raining tomorrow im going to turn the speakers around. right now the 6x9s tweeters are pointing forward, at me. im going to turn them around so they point at the wall instead.

i really hate to do it, but im thinking of ripping these out of the car already this winter and going to the component/sub combo. ive already spent too much time toying with building a large stealth box to house the amp and sub.
