I've finally gotten around to working on the radio. There is the whine that varies as engine speed does. When the cassette or CD is on there is no noise. When the car is not running the radio sound is noise free. I ran a power and ground wire from the battery to the radio and even connected my spare battery, not installed in the car but sitting on the ground next to the car, directly to the radio and the noise is still there. I have also unbolted and clean the ground wire from the antenna to the rear ground near the alarm horn. The shielding around the distributor and plug wires is missing - this did not matter on my previous 73 Corvette as the shielding was gone and the radio sounded fine. I have not remove the antenna and its grounding plate to check on how this connection is made.
Since the only time that the noise is there is when the radio/antenna is in use I believe the noise is antenna generated.
Next ?
Remove antenna and its grounding plate and clean?
Replace antenna - may get one from a junker and try it?
Remove belt from alternator and check for noise? Determines if it the alternator or ignition / antenna generated - maybe?
What type of spark plugs do you run? If my memory serves me correctly if they have an "R" in the number they are resister type plugs. Could be spark plug and or ign wires. Newer radio may also be more sensitive to RFI generated by the ign. system. Just my .02
