Default DNX 5120- bluetooth problem

I just installed my Dbl Din DNX 5120 w/ bluetooth package from Dennis (C5Bearsfan) at Double D Mods.

It took me awhile, but I managed to get through it with some printed out instructions from Greg (pentavolvo).

I had purchased and installed the KCA-BT200 module to get bluetooth for hands-free phone use.

I installed it per instructions. Pretty simple really. I plugged it into the 5120 H/U with the KAB connector, set the type switch per the chart to Off-On-Off, then plugged in the mic.

When I go to set the Bluetooth to pair my phone, I get nothing!!

The phone doesn't "see" the bluetooth module and the H/U doesn't seem to see the bluetooth module either. When I go to "set-up" there is no "bluetooth Setup" line showing like in the book.

Unless there is some trick... I am assuming that the KAB cable came loose when I was mounting the H/U or the BT200 module is bad.

Before I take the console all apart to recheck the connections....... Is there some trick I am missing?

Thanks in advance..

The 5120 does have a software update available. I am not sure if it effects the bluetooth or not. Im a kenwood dealer so every 5120 I install, I always update first. Never had a problem with the bluetooth. I suggest giving kenwood a call as they can determine if your software is the latest version or not. All 5120s, 7120s and 8120s when released last april did need an update. The 7120s and 8120s were all sent back to kenwood to be updated and the 5120s were all dealer updated.

There is a Bluetooth update for that unit, you'll need a notebook computer with bluetooth or you'll have to buy a bluetooth dongle for it to work. Mine worked fine after the upgrade...........

For anyone else with this problem, I contacted Kenwood and this is what I found:

1) The software version needed for the DNX5120 is version 2.4.0 (not the 1.4.0 that I have). This is available on the Kenwood website. One of the problems listed that it fixes is control of Bluetooth module.

I just need to to download the update, put it on a disk, and insert the disk into the 5120 and it will update itself (about 5 min).

2) Once that is done, the 5120 will talk to the bluetooth module. I then can check the software version of the bluetooth. The most recent version of bluetooth software is 1.7.0 (not sure what I have yet). To update that, I will need a PC notebook with bluetooth (I have a MAC) and use the download from their website to update the bluetooth module, or get a dealer to do it..

Don't understand why a module and radio I bought a month or so ago isn't up to date..... but just another thing to chase down with this mod. Eventually I am sure it will be worth it.....
