I have a 00 coupe, I have MTX amps. I have 4ga power runing through the firewall along the passanger sill. The signal cable is stinger twisted pairs running down the center approx 2 ft away from the power cable.
I had slight engine noise before the big 3, but after I finished up the big 3 the engine noise became worse.
I have the amps grounded to the factory ground on the bpost. If i unplug the signal cables I still have the noise. if I turn off the amps via the headunit then the engine noise goes away. I have the same size ground as I do power 8ga.
My amps are mounted behind the seats. there is no noise through the sub amp. The noise does not change much with the gain settings.
Any thoughts?
Hmm, how long is your ground wire? Are you certain you are on bare metal for good contact? There is a chance you have bad RCA's as well, might be worth a quick console removal and plug in a new set direct above the carpet to check.
Might see if i can think of something else that might be doing it.
thanks for the fast reply's, I will try a new pair of RCA's, the ground from amp to body is approx. 1.5 ft., the ground to the frame from batt. is 2 ft. I do have a ground loope isso. sitting around somewhere I will try that also.
I never understood what a ground loop isso does, I just thought that it messed with SQ.
Had the same thing happen to me.I installed a PAC SNI-1 RCA noise filter and no noise now.My noise was from my powered sub.You my need two .These things you can get from Crutchfield, $15.oo each.
Ground loops are caused by different ground/voltage potentials at different ground locations throughout the car. If it's not already done, ground the head unit to the same location as the amps. Also, make sure you've cleaned off the paint around the ground bolt.

Assuming you are unplugging the RCA cables at the Amp and not the Head Unit, if you still have noise it is not the RCA's.
If you are unplugging at the Head Unit, then yes it could be RCA's.
I have unpluged it at the amp. I am at work and I will try the ground loop Issolater and see if that works. I will also try grounding the headunit at the amp ground point. Thank you for all the help. My headunit is a Sony CDX7400 i think, I bought it a year ago.
I fixed my problem, I ran a 14 ga. ground wire from my amp to my headunit, so that those two had the same ground, like spkrboy, stated thank you all for the help, I have 0% noise now and nice clean music. Now I think I am going to upgrade my amp to a JL 300/4 maybe.
