Anybody got any good suggestions for a less expensive alternative to Dynamat for sound insulation? Thinking about putting something underneath the carpet during stereo install, but damn that stuff is expensive!
Well back in the old days (when money was tighter). Used to get egg crate foam in 1/4-1/2 inch thickness from local packing company. Works great and as long as there is no water leaks will last forever. However in some panel mounting and placement its necessay to compress the ever loving hell out of the stuff.
Post this on the C5 tech section or offtopic... I saw some guy a few months post a link to some commerical industrial site that sold the exact same stuff that is dynamat for alot cheaper.... it was mucho cheaper and the same stuff... I cannot remeber what it was used for but some industrial damping...
Something I recommend that I think is better that dynmat is a liquid sound dampener. It is called VB-1 and is produced by Cascade Audio Engineering. Although a little more messy, I think it is easier to apply than dynmat. It's also a lot cheaper. http://www.cascadeaudio.com/
If you also want to use the sheet based dampeners, check out Parts Express, that have generic that works pretty well.

I bought a liquid dampner by Stinger - its blue. I don't remember the cost, but it works wonders. Messy - a little, but you don't have to worry about it coming unstuck or using a hairdryer to make it stick. It also, being liquid of course, will mold to any shape it is put on. Much better than mat.

At Home Depot in the roofing dept. there is this roofing stuff called Ice Guard that is what myself and friends have used. it comes in big rolls of 4' x 20' (cant remember exact size  ) and runs $40. It will do about 3-4 cars and is a cheap alternative. :D
Is this a type of foil backed insultation? I seem to remember seeing something like that in the home warehouse type stores but I will have to go look at the exact stuff you are talking about. Does it deaden sound AND reflect heat out of the interior???
The exact name for it is 'Ice & Water Shield' it is safe adhesive on one side and goes on just like dynamat. It comes in 4' rolls by 50' (you may be able to find small ones. It will deaden the sound but not that good of a job of heat resistant
