I have confirmed that a Rockford Fosgate RFX-8601 6 disc CD changer will work in a C5. I bought one off ebay for $60 and tested with a Bose HU. This changer is built by Panasonic, but has the special software to work in a GM vehicle.
You will need to splice into the stereo harness behind the HU to connect the audio and E&C data connections. A long cable is available from the aftermarket for installing the changer in older GM vehicles. Just cut the connector off that would plug into an older Delco HU and splice the wires into your harness.
I have been researching the GM E&C bus for a project I am working on. This data bus has been used in many GM vehicles to control the stereo system, OnStar, cell phone, HVAC..etc. I happened to stumble across the specific Rockford Fosgate CD changer when I was investigating the keyword E&C using Google. I was suprised that it had a E&C bus interface. I believe that Delco supplied HU's to Rockford Fosgate, and used their standard CD changer interface bus to control the changer used in the system. For all I know, Delco supplied the changers to Rockford. They are really Panasonic units.
It was well known that the specific Rockford Fosgate CD changer would work in some older GM vehicles, it was not known it would work in newer ones also. I bought one and crossed my fingers. From what I can tell it's only the interface cable that limited it's use to older GM vehicles. Splice the cable into a C5 harness and it works.
I have the ability to bench test a C5 HU. You must have a surplus BCM to talk on the DLC buss. The DLC buss tells the HU to turn on. Without a BCM or custom PC software and a OBD II interface, the HU will never turn on outside a car.
