I recently did a few audio-related upgrades, but the speakers I was going to have put in the front didn't happen... I *want* to keep the stock NAV unit in, but are there any speakers that can be put in, without a seperate amp to run them?
It's an '08 C6, currently with a stealth sub in the back and an amp for it.. rear speakers replaced also. Also have tweeters added to the front, but kind-of as a test.. it was just done a few weeks ago, and I'm still figuring out if it's "good enough" ... it does sound better, but some songs (Metallica has a few good examples) still make those speakers suffer at higher volume with an almost crunching sound.
..or replace the head unit, I'm told... then I could do whatever I wanted with front speakers? Is that correct?
Not whatever you want, but more flexibility anyway with just a head unit swap. You can add an amp to either setup and THAT will let you do whatever you want. Without adding an amp to drive front speakers you're limited by the stock amp (very weak and a crossover nightmare) or the amps built-in to a head unit, for which you would have to run new wires.
Running new wires shouldn't be too much of an issue, should it? I'd prefer that to getting another amp...
Are the built-in head unit amps (if I changed the unit) good enough to run new front speakers, or is another amp the better choice? If I had to add another amp either way, I could just keep my NAV unit. If it's unnecessary after changing the head unit, that's probably my better choice, then.
I would (and did) swap out the head unit. I liked the AVIC-700BT, but prefer the DNX6140. I am not a fan of fold down screens because I like *****.....but that's just me.
Changing the speakers/headunit made a huge difference. You won't wince anymore at those certain parts of songs that just aren't balanced.
an amp is the real answer. u could run aftermarket fronts off the headunit but if you go with components (seperate woofer and tweeter) they will be starving for power

Well, again, I have a stealth sub in the back, and an amp for it. I'd just rather not do a second amp for after-market front speakers...
well then u are limited to 3.5 coaxials. if you do a component set up front and power it from ur headunit its gonna sound damn near just as ****ty as the oem system due to lack of power
