What size speakers will fit without modifying the holes? Is there an adapter that will allow my Bose head unit to drive after market amps? Thanks, Dave
I would put 5 1/4 in the front and 6x9 rear. You will probably have to bolt a board in place behind the grill for the 6x9 in the back as they are also 5 1/4 I believe but the 6x9 will sound much better, it is little to no effort to do, and you will not need to modify anything original to do this.
You can buy an adapter that costs almost as much as a new deck to allow you to change the current to work with an aftermarket amp. You will also have a nice whine in your music and it still will sound only as good as a base model panisonic cd player designed in 1988 as this is what it is with bose/delco labels.
Hope this helps.
I notice in your sig that you are running a Nak mb-75. Why this and not the CD700 or MB 100? I have 3 older Lanzar Opti 100 amps and crossover that have never been installed as the car I bought them for was totalled out before I got them in. Is there a room problem with the other decks or something else? I only thought to keep the Bose head unit to keep the dash lighting the same, but see that the Nak's are very close. I used to have a TD100 or 700 (don't remember---OLD;^) ) and liked it a lot. Would a different deck change speaker recommendations? I would like to keep as much luggage space as possible. By the way your install is awsome, but a bit larger than I would prefer. Would a 10" sub fit in the floor behind the pass. seat? Or maybe make some adapters to space out 8" coaxes on the rear panel to supply bass. Please give it your best shot and don't be afraid to think outside the lines a bit. Thanks, Dave
The Naks are far better than Bose sound quality wise. In fact, the CD 700 is argueably the best CD from a sound quality standpoint on the market. The MB100 is a more feature laden MB 75. The 75 is cheaper and still will outperform from a sound standpoint just about any alpine or other make you can name. Minus side, expensive, more skip prone than some makes, FM is not so hot, and good for me but not others is that its very understated and simple looking. TD 700 was one of the best tape decks out. Its big brother the TD 1200II was the car version of Naks Dragon tape deck. It was capable of outperforming the first generation CD players in sound quality.
As to speakers, I have a 12". An 8" can fit in the storage compartment behind the pass seat with some minor mods. Make sure you make it fit in a completely sealed compartment and you use a good maker's sub. You can also make a much smaller box for a single 8 or 10" or get a tube sub like a bazooka. Mine is as large as it is because I didn't want to so anything that would take a while to reverse because I was leasing the car. Now that I own it, I am going to do a little more radical design that will house the mids and tweets in the stock locations. I also may change amps as the ones I have are good but large as I have three channels. I would rather have a setup with two.
I don't think mounting 8" in the stock locations will give you bass as their is not enough air space in the housings. Also, stay away from coax speakers for bass. Coax means you have a tweeter mounted in the center of the woofer. This will limit the woofers travel effectively killing the ability of the woofer to make bass. It is not so bad in smaller sizes as those woofers don't need to travel as far to make mids and higher notes.
Hope this helps.
