I have a Pioneer D3 and the stock Bose crap speakers/amp. I want to scrap the Bose but I do not want to add a sub and lose any space. What are my best (not stupid expensive) options for doing this? I can hide an amp behind the pass. seat. What should I put in the doors to get good sound with as much decent low end thump as can ge expected from an in door setup?
IMHO you will be limited in your choices if you want to put bass drivers in the doors. Some people have put the shallow mount Pioneer speakers in the door but I wouldn't suggest that as the door is not sealed. It also will rattle with any deep bass. In my opinion you should not put subs in the doors.
I suggest checking out a good component speaker. There are many choices out there. Speaker preferences are highly subjective and really come down to which you prefer. I went with the Pioneer Premiere CS720PRS speakers because I liked the sound and the larger tweeter keeps the highs tame. Some tweeters just sound too bright for me especially in the Corvette. The CS720PRS's have also gotten many favorable reviews. You won't get much bass below 60hz without a sub but they will be a heck of an improvement over the Bose speakers.
For an amp I'd probably go with an Alpine PDX-2.150. It fits nicely in the rear cubby for a stealth installation. I would simply disconnect the rear speakers as they are simply fill speakers anyway and don't add anything to the sound stage in my opinion.
get in touch with Glenn aka batman06 he is somewhat local and I did pioneer slim 8" subs in his lower door, 3.5 polks in the upper, and 5 1/4 polks in the back all off a 5 channel pdx amp, im sure he would let you take a listen. its deff more bass then factory.
IMO a nice 6.5 component set with deander will get you decent mid bass, it wont have as much bass as subs in the doors, but it will sound better. Either way you will have a great system. Feel free to utilize me for any questions you may have or help you need, i have done a number of stereos in both c5 and c6s
I'm not necessarily look for more bass than stock, I just don't want less. I want the best sounding overall system on a reasonable budget, but what I do like is occasionally L O U D (think Alice in Chains or Godsmack turned up to '11' at times).
