Hey I have a 96 lt4, I CAN NOT FIND a sub enclosure for two 12" subs ANYWHERE, if anyone has one or know where I can get one PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!! my email is ripkory@yahoo.com
It going to have to be a custom sub enclosure to fit a C4. I assume you have a coupe, to have the proper volume for 12's, it will take up the whole trunk.
Sorry... If I stop scanning the questions and read them instead. :smash:
I meant to say I built a box. I use the rear passenger compartment that has my CD changer in it. My box does to up a lot of room. :D
I would replace the plastic door assembly with an oversized (bigger than the opening) driver baffle of the same thickness: 1/2 - 5/8" Attach the rest of your box to the underside and mount it using the original holes for the door assembly. The compartment is about 1 cu ft, but it's difficult to use all the volume if you need a removable box- since the bottom is bigger than the opening! Much easier if you're willing to assemble the box inside and epoxy it to the walls; even easier to reinforce the compartment with 1/4" plywood and fibreglas from underneath (outside) the car.
Personally I just sealed up the internal gaps, double Dynamatted the inside, and mounted a JL Audio 10w0 on a 1-1/4" thick baffle. Box wall flex is not a big deal since the "walls" are outside the listening environment. And it relieves pressure buildup; sort of like the Dynaudio vario-vent which yields an aperiodic sealed enclosure and reduces impedance spikes.
Excellent idea for mounting the sub in the rear compartment. Gcrouse, looks pretty nice.
Heres a few ideas to ponder.... how could this be done so that the sub is not exposed to the top (loading, undloading and getting dirt onto the sub). It is visible as well.
In other words, when the average Joe looks inside the hatch from above, he sees nothing but stock. No sign of a stereo system. Completely, or near completely hidden. How could the rear storage compartment still be used?
Its been awhile, but what about a sound baffle (not sure if this is the right terminology for it, but remember when they came out with the product to mount a sub in the trunk right behind the seats and use the trunk as the box???) I'm not sure if I'm remembering this correctly.
What about a dual chambered, single ported enclosure? The correct sub may be tough to find. Does anyone have the exact, or near exact volume of the rear compartment?
Just thinking ideas out loud. I'd really like to see what others may have done with that rear enclosure.
I know some folks who build a false floor a few inches above the speaker and let the sound fire out forward or thru a port- sort of like the 4th order single-reflex bandpass you described. You might also do it all within the storage compartment- but probably no bigger than an 8" sub; there's only about 1 cu ft total, plus a larger driver would just be tough to fit.
You could also do your "behind the seat" idea. There's corrugated metal separating the passenger compartment from the front of the storage compartment. You could probably cut it with a matching piece of MDF and bolt the driver in your baffle. I would still seal up the compartment though or you'll have lot of wave cancellation. Also, that metal might be structural reinforcement for the car?
Did you have to pull out the plastic compartment? If so is there something under it to mount the box to?
I removed the entire plastic door assembly and replaced it with a baffle of 5/8" MDF, using the original holes. While I didn't build a box, if you did it would just attach to the underside of this baffle. Of course the dopey plastic tray is gone, but the storage compartment itself is molded in and not removable.
if you want no-one to see, just do what I was going to do. Make a trim ring/grill out of MDF and use a heavy black grill cloth/ or even a carpet to coer it. The bass would travel through either no problem. And If you plan it right the grill will be flush with the rest of the rear storage compartment, so you can leave your top off, and there isn't anything for then to steal :D
