Default How to remove stero in '92

I'm going to replace my Bose Gold head unit with a MP3 deck in a week or two. I'm not upgrading the speakers yet, so I understand I'll be needing a wiring adapter.

Will I be able to plug the adapter into the factory harness and then straight into the radio? Or will I need to do additional wiring.

Also does anyone have any advice on removing the Bose head unit? I can't seem to figure out how to get the dash apart without ruining something.

Thanks

The '92 Bose gold radio has two sections to it: one section is the "control head" where the ***** and switches are (center of dash), the other section is referred to as the "receiver" that is mounted below the glove box. These two sections communicate with each other over the E&C (Entertainment and Comfort) serial-bus. When you turn the volume up, a command is sent from the "control head" over that serial-bus to the "receiver" to tell it to increase the volume -- if you have access to a Vetronix http://www.vetronix.com/diagnostics/tech1a/ Tech-1A scan-tool with the proper software, you can actually monitor the commands when you turn the *****, etc. The "receiver" has the antennae connection on it, and, I believe, the pre-amps in it, and it produces the 1 volt peak-to-peak stereo signal pre-amp output that goes to the individual power amps at each speaker.

Bradley,
You can replace your head unit with a single or dual din CD/Stereo. I just replaced mine with a dual din JVC, and it is a perfect fit. It did not require an installation kit for mounting in the dash.

You can retain use of the Bose speakers if you buy an integration harness from Crutchfield. The harness has a built in amplifier module, and has a connector that you use to plug your Bose speaker wiring in to.

The price of the integration harness is ~$50 from Crutchfield. You can buy the individual components from Scosche Industries. You can see the amplifier interface at http://www.scosche.com/scosche/electronic/FAI3.asp
and you can see the harness (GM02) at http://www.scosche.com/scosche/connectors/gm.asp

If you buy the parts from Scosche, the price will be about 50% of the cost from Crutchfield, but you will need to merge the two components together, whereas, Crutchfield has done this for you.

Good Luck,
:seeya Purp

How to take dash apart:
Open Center Console. Remove two hex screws under carpet in center console. (You need to peel the front corners back to reveal them)
Remove ashtrays and cups
Remove screw from under ashtray
Remove now loose panel surrounding shifter
remove vent over radio(two philips head screws)
Remove screw behind vent
Remove two screws at bottom of panel that covers radio(these were revealed by removing the shifter panel)
Carefully pry this panel away from the radio(it is held in place now only by two clips)
Unscrew deck and remove

The antenna wire is trickier. Some people find it easier to peel back the carpet in the rear drivers side of the car by the back of the trunk to reveal where the wire comes from the antenna. It connects here to an extension that eventually runs to the receiver. You can add your own wire here and run it to the deck. The other way is to reach around in the dash, find the wire and get it out of the reciever and run it to the deck. The receiver is located near the top inside of the dash on the passenger side. PITA. You remove the panel under the passenger dash. Two screws in front, one in the rear, and one torx in the fuse box in the door frame will free the panel. From there, you're on your own. I ran a new wire. :yesnod:

I would skip the integrating to the amps part. You will spend $50 on something you will not need and you have 10 year old paper speakers. Not worth .02$ at this point. Get one set of speakers now and add the other when you can. This way you have sound and don't waste the cash. What deck, speakers, etc. are you looking at?

The PIONEER DEHP7400MP was recommended pretty highly, I hadn't really looked at speakers and I probably won't.

My speakers sound OK to me, and if I get the capability to play CD's I'll be pretty happy.

I'll replace the speakers eventually, but I don't feel like ripping apart my interior and laying new wire and finding places to mount my speakers right now.
