My '93 has the Bose w/CD player - of course the CD player doesn't work :( I really don't want to remove the Bose, so what I'm thinking is I might either buy a CD changer deck with an RF modulator and play it through the Bose radio, or just buy an RF Modulator and plug a portable CD player into it when I want to listen to discs. But there's some isuues (aren't there always?):
1. My '93 is a convertible - the only place I see to put a changer deck is in the luggage space, and it doesn't look like there's enough room to have a changer in there and still put the top down. Anyone had this experience, and if so, what changer did you use and where did you mount it?
2. RF modulators (I think) have to be "plugged in" to the antenna lead on the radio system - is this Bose system a 2 piece with a unit mounted somewhere under the rear deck? Is that where the antenna connection would go?
3. Any and all suggestions for alternatives would also be welcome! Thanks. Jack
The Rf is actually an easy upgrade in the '93. The antenna wire is accessable in the rear compartment under the carpet by the rear driver's side wall where it comes through from outside the car to the compartment. The wire has a plug there and you can plug right in. Also, I have had a changer and other things backthere with the top down, no problems. You have about 10" of vertical available to you. I mounted mine centered at the front of the cargo area and this made it easy to turn around and change cartridges while driving. You can also mount it on the fake storage compartment lid behind the drivers side seat. This covers the ABS unit and isn't able to be opened. It won't interfere with the roof their either.
Remember though, you are putting the sound through a 10 year old paper speaker system that was designed 20 years ago. Also, since it is not a direct CD feed but goes throught the radio, it will only sound as good as the radio section of the Bose which is pretty bad.
Hey Jack, I used to do some stereo work back in Montgomery. Nothing major, just something to make some extra cash. Let me know what you want to do and I'm sure I can help you out. You know I'm over that way almost every weekend.
