Default Subtracting driver displacement for proper box construction.

I emailed Focal Customer Service (Which is top notch, by the way) and got these specs for the 165w:

" The ideal enclosure would be a .35 cubic foot vented enclosure. The port
would be 2 inch diameter, 3 inches long. "

Seems like a pretty big enclosure.. do you think i should worry about driver displacement, or just build it to those exact specs?

hmn.. on second thought, I'm not sure I could get something like that on my door.. how tempermental do you suppose they are to sealed enclosures? I could fit maybe a .12 cubic foot enclosure that's sealed.

You'd have to consult Focal again as far as the sealed enclosure goes. Usually in my experience and others I've alweays worked with, speaker displacement isn't really taken into account. However if your worried just rough calculate the magnet size(displacement area) from the overall required size.

oh well, looks like the Focal rep thinks the space i can work with is worse than leaving it free air... i guess i'll use the ported spec with an L shaped enclosure.

How about just using the Thiele-Small parameters to find other "optimal" or just less than, dimensions that you could use?! I've done MANY MANY boxes where I could get better response out of a "less than optimal" box.

Edit: And to answer the "use driver displacement" question, for a ported/vented box, EXACT measurement is critical. Otherwise why vent? The tuning frequency would be off if the dimensions weren't correct.
