Default Help on a new stereo

I'm about to buy a new stereo system for my 09' coupe with onstar bluetooh and XM radio. I am going to start with a pioneer avic-z110bt. I want 1 10'' sub, components in the door and full range speakers in the rear. I want to run 2 amps one for the sub and 1 for the others. I would like to put the 2 amps behind the seats.

Could someone please tell me what kind (brand) of amps, speakers, box and anything else i may need to buy.

Oh...and i would like to spend around $2500. Is this possible??

all suggestions will be appreciated

Thanks,
Vince

I just ordered a package with Dennis at Double D mods. It is a Kenwood 6860 head unit (with all the nessasary adapters and modules, with install kit), a (4) channel Kenwood amp, (2) Focal 6.5 component speakers for the front doors, and a JL Audio stealth box. The price was close to what you are looking at spending. I Dont really care about powering my back speakers and I will just hook them up to the head unit power along with the dash speaker. Rear speakers can be adjusted to just have slight fill in for the back. I will only run one amp and one set of good speakers in the front with a sub box.

You'll have tons of options for equipment to use, so it'll be hard for anyone to provide any real specifics - everyone will have an opinion though.

My recommendation would be to stay with better quality equipment. Car audio pricing has dropped so much the last few years that you can pick up good gear pretty cheap.

Not to specifically recommend these brands, but you could put together a pretty good system for the price you're planning on spending:

Subwoofer enclosure for C6 - about $200 (Subthump box about $170 shipped, MadVette about $225 or $250 shipped when they have a sale going)
10" Subwoofer - about $130 (Rockford Fosgate P3 Shallow mount, or JL Audio 10W3v3 for $20 more - be careful about clearance in mounting depth and above the speaker with the targa top stored - some box/speaker combo's work better than others)
Mono subwoofer amp - about $175 (Rockford Fosgate Punch 300)
2 channel amp - about $140 (Rockford Fosgate Punch 200-2)
Front speakers - Component 6.5" set - $150 - $200 and up (JL Audio C2 series or JBL GT series are $150... the old Precision Power 356CS (a/d/s design) were great and were being closed out for around $150 recently).
Speaker plates for the 10" door opening - $100 from forum vendors
PAC adaptor - $100
Wiring / installation kits - $70 (Radio shack was clearing out the Monster Cable amp install kits recently for about $20, and the dash kit for the head unit from Metra or Scosche should be about $25, and you'll need good quality RCAs - about $30)
Pioneer AVIC 100BT - $1000

That leaves about $500 for the install. Since nothing needs to be built, the wiring/installation should fit in that amount I think (I do all my work myself, so I'm not sure what a good shop will charge).

All of the prices above are straight from a couple of reputable online shops, but they're not authorized dealers. If you want to buy from authorized dealers for those goods, it will be considerably more.

You might want to check out audio forums like DIYMA - they'll usually have a forum dedicated to hot deals online.

I agree with baxterboy - rear speakers aren't worth spending much money on. If you really want to upgrade them, just leave them running off the stock amplifier (non-Bose I hope?), and put some coaxials back there. But I'd recommend just leaving the stock ones hooked up, with the fader set forward, and the back speakers just used for fill.

Thanks for the info...non-bose by the way, what do you think of Boston Acoustics SR60 components, JL Audio W3 sub, and the Alpine PDX-5 5 channel amp...any good? and is the amp powerful enough to push the sub?

oh and there is really no use for rear speakers??... I was going to buy some good quality 2 way speakers like the Boston Acoustics SR55 but if its not worth it then maybe not

thanks,
Vince

I haven't used the SR60's, but generally the BA speakers are pretty good. If you've listened to them, and like the sound, that's they most important part. Everyone's ears are different. One thing to remember is that the Corvette interior is pretty small, and there's lots of glass area (relative to the other interior size), so high frequencies will tend to get bounced around a lot. So components that are brighter (high frequencies more emphasized) may end up too bright in the Vette.

Some people like the Alpine PDX amps. They're small, and run really cool, so you can put them anywhere. They're not the most quiet of amps though, and they're moderately expensive, so some people don't like them. On the road, with the car running, the differences in sound between good amps is really small, so I wouldn't worry about the quality of the PDX personally, so if the size and flexibility is worth the money, it's not a bad choice.

Some people like the rear speakers, but personally, I don't like what it does to the imageing. The placement of the speakers, being really close to the back of your head, and pointing directly to the middle of the car, mucks with the imaging. So if the speakers are playing loud enough to really hear them, they sound weird. And if they're used just for fill, it doesn't matter too much how good of a speaker it is.
