I did a quick search and didn't find anything on this subject, but I have a 12 month free trial offer with my 2010 Grand Sport (Standard Radio). I want to install a new Pioneer Z110BT with the XM add-on module. I just called XM customer service and asked if I could transfer my trial offer from the stock radio to a new unit. They confirmed that I could, but I'm not going to take their word on it.
So I'm asking. Has anyone transferred their trial offer from their stock radio unit to another unit? If yes, was there any issues?
I've done it, but it was a very big hassle. I installed a Kenwood DNX9960 in my 2010 Coupe 3LT within a week of getting the car. I just assumed it would be no problem to transfer the free 12 month trial to the new radio. I called XM and told them my story, and they said no problem. I gave them the new radio ID and they told me to just tune the new radio to channel 1 and leave the radio on for 15 minutes and I'd be back in business. A half hour later it still didn't work. It was getting late so I waited until the next day to try again.
The next day I called XM again, and this time I was told that the free 12 months was for the radio, and not the car and that I'd have to sign up for a new subscription. I told them that was ridiculous and I asked to speak to a manager. The manager gave me the same story, and he wouldn't budge. I have 2 other cars with XM service, so I told the manager that I was going to cancel all of my cars. So he connected me to their cancellation department.
As soon as I was connected to the cancellation department, I started yelling, and demanded the cancellation of my 2 current cars and a refund of the unsed time. The guy I was speaking to calmed me down and asked me to explain the situation. After telling him my story, he agreed to fix the situation by doing the following: First he cancelled the 12 month trial subscription completely. Then he gave me a new 1 year subscription at half price, and then he used his ability to make deals to wave the other half of the new subscription so that the 1 year subscription would be free. He was very nice, I thanked him and I haven't had any problems since.
This phone conversation with all 4 people (the 1st one I talked to transfered me to someone else) took over an hour, and I'm sure it raised my blood pressure a bit. But in the end I was happy.
I don't know if you will have the same luck as I did. It may depend on who you speak to. All I can say is good luck and keep fighting.
I am glad I found this thread today. I just purchased an 11 GS with 1 year XM trial subscription and intended to add an aftermarket Nav/XM/iPod head unit to the car. I hadn’t even considered it being a problem to switch out radio IDs on the trial subscription but something made me think to verify it. Well as it turns out, after reading this thread and a call to XM’s crappy customer service (who I couldn’t understand BTW), I cannot transfer the trial to an aftermarket head unit. They said the trial is for the radio, not for the car. What a crock – yet another reason not to do business with XM
Having had many previous dealings with XM "support", I've decided to keep the stock deck awhile on my 3LT and take advantage of the 1 year trial. while seeing if any new decks come out.
I'm not even going to bother trying to explain transferring it to a new deck and would probably just pay $77+ taxes to activate the new radio if there was one I really wanted today.
Their "support" is the worst, their cancellation dept. is much better.
