HI,
I'm posting this for a guy at work hear. His 97 vette has a blown front speaker. He bought a replacement unit from the factory (speaker and amp combo). The only questestion is how do you replace the left front speaker and amp. Do you just remove the door panel or do the speaker grills pop out? Any help would be apperated!
Dumb question, but if you pull on the grill, what actually breaks? if anything. I went to an audio shop and the idiot kid working there looking at the stock system started pulling on the grill. :mad You'd figure they know better. He stopped when it wouldn't come off, but it doesn't seem flush anymore on the front top corner. The drivers side is flush. Maybe it was like this from the factory, I really don't pay attention to things till after I think something may have happened. If it was damaged, how can I fix it?
I'm just over paraniod with things like this, the answer is probably simple, just making sure
All that happens is that the metal becomes distorted and the securing tabs holding it to the doorpanel get bent and don't hold the grill as tightly. Of course, the only way to fix it, is to remove the door panel and tighten the grill tabs....assuming the front face of the grill isn't all bent to schit.
Thanks, so its that simple. I guess I'll do that when I get my system done. Worst case scenario, the grill itself can be replaced by itself? Also, on the door panel are there plastic retainer clips holding it to the door? Should they be replaced when installing the sound system? I ask this because on my grand prix, the door panels became loose after they were removed and reinstalled.
Thanks in advance.

Nope, it's not a separate part you can order from GM. The only way to get a new grill is to buy a new door panel.

I've had my door panels off several times, and the plastic hardware still seems to hold it on pretty tight - not as tight as original though. I'd say that you won't notice a difference if the panels are only removed once. After that, you might want to replace them.
