tweeter died :( any ideas?
I would stay away from Pioneer or low end polk. In fact, if you're not buying the SR6500 series polks, I'd stay away from them too!
Anything you can find at Best Buy, or Circuit City is going to be Made in China rubbish! I know I'm going to catch heat for that statement, but it's the truth... Will they sound OK, comparatively speaking yes, as you've been running your stock set-up. Upgrade to a 50.00 set of soft/cloth/silk dome tweeters, and you'll be in heaven!
These are a really nice pair from a great manufacturer, plus they can by aimed at the driver for better staging:

I've personally heard these, and for the $, they're hard to beat:

These are used, and a bit beat up, but they will sound amazing:

Decent Lanzar Tweeters:

Some more Cadence:

Getting more "high End", but these are nice, you probably don't have enough power to run these off your deck though:

So anyway, as you can see, your options are limited to your deck power and your wallet. If it were me, I'd buy the first set of Cadence tweets at the top. They are affordable, adjustable, and wont require a ton of power to make them sing. If you want cheap OEM stuff, PM me your contact info and I'll send you a new set of Chevy tweeters.
Good luck!

should i go with a 3.5 inch 2 way or strictly a tweeter?

The C5 Bose system has an eight inch bass driver and a 3.5" "twiddler" that handles the mid and high frequencies. Simply replacing a twiddler with a tweeter will cause you to lose the frequencies in the 100-3500 hz region. (Approximately... I don't have the Bose specs in front of me for frequency response.)
The recommendations regarding the Pioneer or Polk 3.5" speakers is decent for the stock Bose system.
Rick's idea to use an aftermarket Tang Band driver from a place like Parts Express would work, too... if the proper research is done regarding response characteristics, impedance, sensitivity, etc...
Simply slapping a tweeter into place and saying it's all good is bad advice.
