[iPod2Car] Differences in functionality between 5G video and Classic

Installed a Peripheral iPod2Car device in it a couple years ago
I have two iPods that behave very differently in the car.
iPod 5G (video), 60GB: This ipod works fine in the car. I'm able to do some rudimentary controlling of the iPod from the head unit such as skipping to the next song but I never do as I have full control of the iPod manually. I can't navigate playlists or artists or albums via the head unit, but I don't care as I can use the click wheel and navigate the iPod without difficulty. All is good and I love the setup.
iPod Classic, 160GB: I recently got this new iPod. When I connect it to the car it immediately becomes nearly impossible to navigate with the click wheel. I have to disconnect it to navigate to a new album or playlist. When it is playing it seems fine otherwise, although sometimes the screen backlight will stay on all the time, other times it will go off as normal. I do have the same rudimentary control of it via the head unit but like I said, I don't like to do it that way.
So, what's the difference between the iPod 5G and the iPod Classic that causes the difference in functionality? I'm rather wary of using the Classic in the car now as I'm fearful that perhaps some damage could occur.
I briefly looked at the iPod2Car documentation and really the only settings there are for it are to set the dip switches based on the particular GM car model. They are not iPod specific dip switch settings.
Thoughts?

The PXDP is just fine with either model now
