alright so i figured my sound system lacks something... yes a subwoofer but i got no clue on where to install it i don't want to give up my storage compartments and i don't want to have it take up alot of space. I'll be looking into buying one of those new 10" space saving subs.
so far the only idea on how to install it is to mount it into an enclosure and just sit it down in the back of the cargo space against the rear vertical wall near the rolled up luggage shade. any other suggestions?
For what they are they are pretty good. And they are easliy removable. You can take them out in 30 seconds and still use the rest of the system. Just make sure you don't park with the windows open.
Re: Sub for a c4? where to install? (92TripleBlack)
I have Bazookas in my '97 S-10 Blazer (daily driver). They provide decent bass response but, the hold down straps keep coming lose every now and then. :yesnod:

You can easily put nice woofers (10” to 12”) in your Vette without sacrificing storage space. You can fit exactly a 2.5 cubic ft. box in the rear area and not block your storage compartments, still be able to use your roll-up hatch area cover and still mount your Targa in the stock place. You will get much better sound than a bass tube and it will look a lot cleaner also. If you need any advise on audio for your Vette just let me know, I have custom installed all of my equipment as well as others.
As soon as I get the pictures developed I will post my latest custom install in my 35th Anniversary Edition. The flush mounted amp rack is on a pivoted hinge from the sub enclosure that opens like a hatch to grant access to the storage area. A lot of work but looks sweeeeeet. :D

yeah i looked into this one box that they had at the stereo shop with one 10" woofer in it and we put it in my car and well it didn't take up all that much space at all. i would still have space to dump my bookbag in the rear and for the targa. but i doubt my car would be much of a grocery getter anymore with a woofer in the rear.
but yeah i would love to see your setup in your car do fire over an email or something of your pictures once you have them developed.
Those Bazooka tubes pretty much suck when compared to a real subwoofer.
Somebody around here was installing two 8" subs in the rear 6x9 compartments. They won't move the air of course that a couple 10s or 12s would, but you can get decent hit and clean sound. Look at JL Audio and Kicker Solobarics.
Another option is the left compartment- has ABS modulator in it and isn't usable anyway. There's like 4-5" above the ABS to the top of the cargo doors. I have an amp mounted above it and I'm positive you could make a baffle to fit a single 10" sub there and sit flush with the right side door and cargo floor.
Either of these would keep your whole cargo area and right storage compartment.
If you wanted to use that drivers' side storage compartment, you could separate the carpet from the door assembly, cut off the left side door/frame, replace it with 5/8" MDF speaker baffle, glue/tape the carpet back down and cut out the speaker opening. I used a second layer of MDF which fits inside the compartment glued/screwed to the bottom of the top baffle.
If using the rear 6x9" openings for 8" round, you'll probably have a 1/2" carpet gap on each side. You might use a square or oval board to surface mount the subs, then finish it nicely. Or perhaps you could get by with an oversized grill? A much more complicated, stealth install would be to build the baffle inside the compartments, mounting the 8" subs at angle, then just let the sound come out thru the original grills. From what I remember, it would fit, but you better check it out yourself.

On that note, today I took one of my rear speakers out and tried to test-fit a Dynaudio MW170 8" speaker that I have in there.
I wouldn't bet the farm on it, but after looking at it I am reasonably sure that one could build a baffle out of 1/2" MDF to screw onto the 6 stock mounting holes then seal it good with caulk and mount this particular 8" speaker on the baffle, and mount the stock grills on top.
Now we are getting somewhere. I asked about this in another post. Now I am curious as to how it would sound. I really want a stealth install without losing any room in the compartment. Good stuff...

It won't play quite as low as a 10" in the storage compartment would, but it should still sound very good. How low it will play would depend on what 8" driver you used, of course.
The Dynaudio I test-fit is about 3.5" deep. With the Bose unit completely out, I was able to set the speaker in the cavity and it sat almost flush with the mounting surface. The back of the speaker was just barely touching the area underneath it on the bottom side. Assuming you were mounting it to an MDF baffle, that will raise it high enough to not touch. But I think any speaker much deeper than 3.5" would not fit.
The cavity the Bose unit sits in is pretty large. It extends back past the back wall of the storage area. I have no idea what the volume of it is, but it might be too large or too small for the 8" you choose. It's such a weird shape that I can't think of any way to measure it, aside from turning the car on its side and measuring how much water it will hold. The walls of it might also be so thin as to flex, and it might not be sealed well either. But, it should still sound better than the Bose crap!
Thanks fior the information, it is very helpful. If I get a chance, tomorrow, I will pull my 6x9's and see if I can figure out what is going on back there.
