My 98 has the bose stereo, the driver side speaker is popping and cracking, my local stereo shop said it sounded like the amp in the speaker was bad, so I bought a good set of bose front speakers and put it in today, it is better but still doing it some ,the guy I bought the car from kept the interior wet with armor all or something , could it be the deck itself , and not the speaker. Please help. Thanks
You need to determine if it's the 3.5" twiddler or the sub that's bad. Turn the fade/balance ***** so only the bad set is playing, then adjust the tone all the way up/down to find out which speaker is bad.
If it's the sub, your best bet is buying a take-off from someone who replaced the entire setup. If it's the twiddler just buy any aftermarket 3.5" 4-ohm 2-way set (Polk db351 are popular).
If it's only bad on the drivers side, and you can't isolate it to twiddler or sub with controls on the radio, then you need to pull the door apart for a look at the speakers. If you're lucky it will be a visually obvious physical problem.
If the speakers look OK, then you can rule out the radio by swapping pass side set with drivers side to see if problem moves or stays put. if it moves, speakers. If it stays, radio.
I put a completely different speaker assembly in the driver door I bought off ebay, it didnt change anything, so then you are saying it is the radio, what about the other thing people talk about that is under the dash or something,.
There is a Bose 'signal processor' in C5, above and to the right of the gas pedal IIRC. If you're sure it's not a speaker, it could be that or the radio. If it were my car I'd still swap the speaker assemblies left to right and see what happens.
I believe it's above the gas pedal in all C5. The plastic trim is easy to remove, just pull straight down on the round push pins along the front edge and it will fall to the floor if you pull it straight back towards the seat.
