c5 Front Door Speaker Replacement
I have a 2002 Z06 and I want to replace the speakers in the front doors and leave the factory head unit for now. I also want to replace the speakers with a 2 piece component speaker setup. If I understand things correctly (and that's a big if), the woofer in the door is powered by an amp in the door and the smaller speaker is powered by the built-in amp in the head unit. Is that correct? If so, are both of these feeds full frequency or is there a cross over in the mix? If there is a crossover, where is it located and what is the cut off point?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Are there any speakers and/or amplifiers that are accepted as better than average for the Corvette or do the same basic principles that apply to my daily driver apply here as well?
One last thing, thanks for the help and direction. I see that you have helped many here on the forum and I appreciate any and all help I can get.
The center tub in C5 is perfect for a sub, and the rear wall is a great place to mount an amp. Add a good component set in the doors and you're jammin'

However, to answer your question about what to get we need to know your budget. You can make a pretty good sounding system for $500, a great sounding complete overhaul for $1500, or a world class system for $3000.
You can also save $ by doing as much as you can DIY. There are plans for a sub box in the FAQ, you can make your own door plates, give up RAP and you can go without an interface, buy used/refurbished speakers and you can get twice the quality for your 'new equipment' budget....
I'm not really in to Rap and I don't have to shake the entire car to pieces to enjoy the music. I usually listen to classic rock or jazz. As far as what I want out of the system, I want a very good sounding system but I don't want to spend 5000 to do it. The head unit is the big variable at the moment because I need to decide if I want to go with a double din so I can get rid of the Garmin and maybe connect a backup camera etc. I do have an idea of what I can spend for speakers amps etc. I'm thinking somewhere around 1000 or a little more including all the other goodies like sound deadening, amp kit etc.
I can also give you an idea of what I have in my daily driver because I want to do something a bit better than that. I'm happy with it but it's more of a budget build. I do like the hu though.
HU - Kenwood KDC-X792
Amp - Profile California AP1040
Speakers - Infinity Kappa 682.7cf
Sub - Kenwood KSC-SW1 (no laughing please)
I have a few other add-ons like Siruis radio, Bluetooth etc but you get the idea. I like the sound but it's average and that's fine for that car. I hope this helps clarify what I'm doing.
