I'd like to build an amp rack that sits right behind the seats at the forward edge of the hatch area. Anyone have plans on one?
What type of wood should I use? How do I secure it to the hatch floor (God forbid I'm ever in a wreck, I don't want that thing flying around the car..)?
Do most people build a rectangle of wood? i.e. do the amps sit on a piece of wood, with another piece flush with the tops of the amps?
Or do most people have the amps on the hatch floor with just a single piece of wood flush with the tops of the amps?
Also, I'd prefer the install to be stealth. I don't really need to be able to see the amps. I just want them mounted securely, with a way to get to them when needed for adjustments, etc.
Any suggestions or plans would be appreciated. Thanks.
If I remember correctly IndyPace78, had a nice one made of particleboard/plywoood(?) with carpet covering. Mine is made of a base piece of 1/2" Birch which spans from rear speaker to rear speker in my coupe hatch. The piece has routered tabs, which have the trim plastic residing in the grooves holding the rack in place. I then made a semi-arc cover shroud, it starts by the top storage bases and gradually curves over the amps, finally resting over the hump right behuind the passenger/driver seats. It's a one piece top that is secured using dowl pins (fiberglassed into the cover) and locator pin holes mounted to the rack itself. So the top cover can only be removed from the rearward direction. I'll have pics in a week or two when work slows down.
Since most folks don't like to have holes drilled in their body pan, one trick I've seen used is to secure small blocks of wood to the body pan with Liquid Nails. Then, something like an amp rack or speaker baffle would be screwed to the blocks. It's a very secure mount and completely reversible if necessary with minimal evidence of it ever being there.
I also like the liquid nails/blocks of wood idea. What is liquid nails, an epoxy of some sort? Can it be removed?
It's construction adhesive found in your favorite hardware store in a caulk tube. I think they make different flavors for specific materials (wood, masonry, etc). It's pretty strong when totally cured. You can remove it by scraping it off with a putty knife & a lot of elbow grease.
Joey,
What did you make the curved amp cover out of? Sounds pretty cool. Hurry up and get those pics posted.. :)

Thanks for the ideas..
Liquid nail can be removed, but it's some strong stuff!!
I used wood teplates for the sides and a cut-down version for the center between the amps. Then I went to town using about 6 layers fiberglass resin and matting.
I'm not really sure since I didn't do the install, but I know the equipment is mounted on a wood plank. I don't think anything is drilled into the car body.
Sorry I can't give more info.....
