I have always preferred a separate and easy to reach sub level(gain) control even when playing my audiophile disks as recording engineers, musicians, etc....like to use different levels, even on the same disk.
Some songs just dictate more bass, some less, sometimes the recording is quite decent but the bass level is way off or just not great so I want to adjust it to my taste, etc...
Other times like when playing something just because I love the music but the recording is crap, I can tweak the bass up or down to help make it better or at least more tolerable.
I am very sensitive, really have spoiled ears now, to such things, it was easier way back when just having a stereo at all was so cool I could live with just about anything it put out
The XR-5S doesn't have a connection for a remote bass control ****. If your HU doesn't have an adjustment you'd need to use some type of independant bass controller on the RCA's.
I have the same amp, so I just adjusted the gain to a middle spot where just about everything that I listen to sounds good. If I take out the roof and need a boost I just adjust it up some on the HU controls.
