I want to set up a modest system in a 08 C6. It currently has the u66 (7) speaker configuration as well as Onstar (want to retain Onstar).
I have a Pioneer HU (not installed yet) but im on the fence about speakers and amp. I would like to replace my speakers and do an aftermarket amp with the goal of having much improved sound and some bass, but dont care about thunderous booming bass.
I need some suggestions on speaker replacement, amp type and what interface to use, I have a PAC OS-2C but not sure if its right of if I need the BOSE model.
Thanks for any suggestions...Im ready to get moving on this.
There are many different ways you can go. Would you like to do a sub woofer or none at all? Some are happy with the bass provided by the door/rear speakers but some want a little more bottom end w/o the boom of a ghetto car.
A quality set of 6.5" components in the doors and a set of 5.25" coax in the rear openings(some dont like the rear fill) and a small amp to power it all is pretty easy to do.
There are many choices of speakers you could go with and you will hear tons of all differing opinions here. Best bet is decide how much you can spend and listen to the ones which fit your budget.
Myself, I went the JL route. C5-650's in front, XR525's in the rear, Kenwood HU, JL Stealthbox sub and two JL amps powering it all.
Sorry cant help with the interface question. There are many helpful guys here who will.
Interface info is in the FAQ stickied at the top of the section. I've lost track over the years so I can't quote it off the top of my head any more but Bose is not what makes the difference of which to use, Onstar is.
Otherwise the basic layout NYC6 recommends is typically the way to go. Rear speakers are a function of personal taste. I prefer to concentrate on the front stage when I listen but many find it sounds odd without fill in the rear. To find out if missing them would bug you just fade the factory system all the way forward and see if you miss it. If you don't you can save yourself some money and time by skipping the rears.
Komoman, I have been reading the stickys and theres plenty of good info, I see you have contributed plenty.
I have done lots of installs myself, im just finding the Corvette a bit intimidating.
I guess im just wanting something laid out that I can copy, you know..put these speakers here, this amp there.......
You can do it......
Your going to get a million different answers. First find out about the onstar and bose issue if there is one. I always run my own wires whenever bose is involved for the HeadUnit, it helps if there is a point of failure but thats just me. Amps can go anywhere you like, you will see just about every solution has been tried. Good luck on the install.
Also I do have 2 amps for sale if your interested in going front stage.
(PDX 1.600 & PDX 2.150)
If you can DIY the sub box it will save you a good bit of money. If you'd rather just buy one, there are several available. I went with a shallow 12" sub in a square box (pic). There's a good DIY for mounting an 8" sub in one of the rear tubs HERE
If you like having rear speakers, consider a compact class D 5-channel amp. I'm currently using the Kenwood XR-5S and have no complaints.
If you just want the fronts and sub, a 4 channel is all you need with 1/2 going to the doors and 3/4 bridged to the sub.
Come up with a target budget, decide on DIY or drop-in sub box, then get the best equipment your budget allows. C5 BearsFan and RAAMaudio are both forum vendors who can hook you up with good gear at great prices.
I've done quite a few systems in various cars through the years, and vette isn't that hard. It just looks intimidating and taking some of the panels off for the first time is kind of scary but you get over it. I remember the first time I took off the door panel, it sounded like I ripped it off. Other than that, wiring the doors is a breeze, mounting stuff in the trunk is pretty simple, and you can build any box you can imagine. There is a lot of room for design and layout. Read up on what other people have done, look thru some of the build threads to get some ideas and come up with a plan. I'm working on my third vette system right now. I like 2 tens in the back and good set of components in the doors running off either a large 4 channel or 2 smaller 2 channel amps. I never bother with the back speakers. If you put good speakers up front with enough power, it sounds much better IMO. Good Luck.
Thanks NY...I have a decent budget and may like to run like a 8" sub.
I would like to hear what others have to say.
I'm not sure about the room in a C6, but I have a nice upgrade in sound and base from a stealth install in the rear cubby of a C5. It is a good upgrade in sound quality, and only about a 600.00 +- budget.
Elemental Design speakers and crossovers for the front, 8" sub and box and 4 channel amp in rear. Love it.
