I installed the 6980, when the head unit boots up it has the kenwood logo while it is loading. Is it possible to replace this with the C6 logo? How do you go about doing that if it is possible.
Thanks for any info.
I got these instructions from the Kenwood forums; still working on my 6980 install so can't verify but:
Attach USB device with a Windows 16 bit RGB .bmp image at 800x480 pixel size in root directory of drive.
- Power up 6980
- Hold down TEL button, then MENU, then hit reset button.
- Unit will boot to screen customization screen - choose OEM
- Choose desired image from USB drive and follow on screen prompts
- When done, hold down the TEL/MENU/reset combo again to reboot
- Hit finish button at bottom of the reset screen that comes up. You can save settings before all this to not have to redo any prefs. See manual.
Thanks DavyC,
I also found that on the kenwood forum, I tried it but when the 6980 resets I do not get the customization screen. It just gives me the screen to reset the ipod, camera, etc.
I gave up on it after 3 tries. Let me know if you get yours to work. There may be a certain order, either hold at the same time.
When i push the Tel button first, then the menu button the unit goes dark. Then i let go and push the reset button.
Don't know if the 6980 is the same but the 9980 goes into detail on how to do this is the manual that you can go to kenwoodusa site and load. it is under screen settings change back ground image. if the same is easy
Did you get your startup screen changed? I just got around to doing mine. Found some other instructions that are basically the same as those above with more detail. Let me know if you need.
Hey DavyC,
No, I was not able to change it. I tried a few times but it did not work. It still shows the Kenwood name when booting up. Tell me what you did>
Oscar
These are basically the same as before with some more detail:
1. First the image must be formatted for use as a start up screen image:
Using Photoshop or another Photo editing program resize the image to 800 X 480.
Save the picture as a BMP 16bit full color file. In the advanced settings change the RGB to R5,G6,B5
Save the image on a USB drive.
2. Installing the start up image into the receiver:
• Connect USB memory which contains BMP image file
• Press [MENU + TEL + Reset] to enter setup mode (Triangle is the reset button)
(Continue holding the MENU + TEL until receiver powers back on)
• To change startup screen to the image on USB memory select “OEM Image”
• Choose the image you want from the list
• If the image is correct press the “enter” button
• Once picture is finished writing it will return to the screen below
• Press the reset button to exit the Startup Screen Menu.
• To return to the original startup screen follow the same step and select “Kenwood Image”
I hadn't realized that the lighted red triangle was the reset button. Had to use small screw driver to press, finger wouldn't do it.
Dave, I tried holding down the menu + Tel + Reset, system powers down. I keep holding it down and it does not start back up until i let the buttons go. Then it goes it startup setup mode. I must be doing something wrong. I cannot get it to show me the USB file
Never mind Dave, I got it to work.
Thanks for all the help
I am having the same issue with my head unit. I was able to change the background image, however I cannot change the start up image. (I don't want the generic Kenwood image).
What did you do to finally get the image to boot up? I'm having the same issue after hitting the reset button. How long do I continue to hold down the other buttons after releasing the reset?
Also, can a .jpg image work? It worked for the background screen.
I guess I'll have to leave my background "stock." I'd have to pull the unit back out to get to the USB cable. I have my iPhone adapter cable plugged into it. Mine is the 6960 unit though. The predecessor to the 6980 I think.
Wished there was a way to use the memory stick input.

Did you leave the USB input inside? I ran mine outside to the glove box where you can use it.

Yeah, I kept it all tucked in the back. The 6960 has a little different hookup I think. My iPhone cable plugs into it and into the din jack in the back of the unit. No biggie. It's the wife's car. I still have the stock setup in my 04.
I have followed the online instructions exactly and cannot get the unit to reboot to the screen where I can then load my preferred image.
I press and hold the Menu/Tel and Reset buttons and the unit shuts down. However, while still holding the Menu/Tel buttons as described, the unit does not boot back up...
I got a new 2012 DNX7190. Can change the background screen but not the start up screen. If I hold down Tel & Menu buttons, the thing seems to go (power off), but it never reboots. If I press the reset triangle while holding down the Tel & Menu buttons, it will reboot but no menus to change the start up screen. I tired beginning with with the car in accessory mode and and again ignition powered off - no difference.
