Default C4 Stereo Upgrade

I'm looking to get some more information that I can't find through searching. I'll probably use this thread to post my install once it starts.

I'm working on putting together a new audio system for my 92 coupe. So far I have an Alpine 40x4 amp that I'm going to bridge to 100x2@4ohm to power some Focal Utopia 136w two way components.

The questions I have are as follows:

I am going to install subs in the rear speaker areas, and either port or seal the cavity (maybe .35cuft of airspace), but I can't decide if I want to do a 6.5" or 8" subwoofer. I was looking at Tang Bands, RE, and other small brands (JL price is a no/go) to put in. I'm not looking to rattle my mirror, but instead looking for tight and accurate subs to fill in the low end. I have found pictures of people with 8's in the rear but don't know how loud they would be. I was thinking of doing just one 8 in the back and using the other cavity to hide away crossovers or amp wiring. I do not want to use my storage bins for subs. Can anyone give me some feedback on if 6.5s would be loud enough for when the targa is out? Is two 8s in the back too much bass? Should I put in 8s but keep the gain low?

Second question is for powering the system. I'm wondering with the Alpine amp, and the second amp (probably 300w rms or less) powering the sub(s), is a cap necessary? Would the alternator keep up with two small amps? Or do I need to supplement?

Those are my questions for now, I'll see what comes up when I start getting other components picked out.

Mine is a little different setup, its in a vert. I used 2, 6 inch subs in tubes which I fire right at the back of the seats..works out fine for me with 150 watts to each.

8" rear subs will fit fine, you will just need to make a plate to hold the sub in place. If you do a search, I think that there was a guy who had 10's in the back of a C4.

To answer your question, I would agree w/ Penta and go for 8's, the 6.5 won't play as low as the 8's will.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have been trying to keep to craigslist to keep prices low, but everyone I email about 8" subs or a nice head unit (looking for kenwood, pioneer, or alpine that can color match interior), doesn't reply. I'm in no hurry, so I'll update as I progress.

If your looking for used equipment in good shape at good prices, go to the DIYMA forum and check out the classified section. They also have a hot deals section, good place to find gently used audio equipment and info on how to set it up.
