I'm having a hard time convincing myself that I really need to add a rear mounted camera when I install my DD. Anyone with similar feelings end up regretting it? My neck still works OK.
Are cameras supposed to be mainly for safety reasons or also a means of spying on people behind you?
For me it was to make it easier to back into parking spaces. It lets you see exactly where the back of the car is so you can park all the way into the space with confidence. The back of the vette is pretty tall so it's tough to get a good idea of how close you are without a camera.
I wouldn't miss mine much if it wasn't there any more, but I'm glad I put it in.
I mostly use it backing out of my garage in the early morning hours when I haven't quite woken up yet, and I know that as the image just starts to disappear from the very bottom edge of my view screen that point is 12" from the bumper.

I guess it is still morning here. "quite woken up"
OK now to answer question, I too had the same question if I should or not add the camera. Have a new HU coming and thought about whether or not to add when installing. I decided to do it then and also ordered the sound deader from RaamAudio to do this at the same time and get it all over with at once.

I know this is a few weeks old, but just do it. It isn't a big deal to run the wires. Nice to have... especially if you have the top up and the window is wet or hasn't defogged yet.
No cutting required if you use one of the license plate cams. They use the stock license plate mounting holes. Pop out the reverse light on the passenger side, run the cable back up behind the rear fascia. Remove the inside taillight on the passenger side and you'll see a big grommet going through into the cabin. Poke a hole in the grommet with a punch/drillbit/small flathead/etc, use some needlenose pliers to pull the camera wire through and run the cable up to the head unit.
It's really quite easy.

I'm assuming you can run that for constant power that way you can view the rear anytime not just backing up? For $30 bucks shipped that it one hell of a dealWonder if their is a way to record also....hmmmm, even those wireless ones seems kinda cool for the same price.

Do you have any cutting to do where you mounted it? You put it above the plate....right?
Thanks for the help.
Steve
Yes, but it was some of the easiest cutting one can do (I used a small dremel tool). Plus you really can't screw it up because that spot faces downward. I just liked having it mounted that way as opposed to the license plate ones (personally) but those are also a good alternative, especially if you are hesitant on the cutting part.

Switched 12v, yes. Constant power... Not a good idea.

I have a cheap Boyo camera in my installation If I had a chance to do it again, I would add a camera that marked distance to objects behind me. Without that, it's difficult marking depth of field.
If I were so inclined I would definitely use the camera, AND I'd put one in the front as well, AND put in a DVR for each/either. How could this not be a good idea.
