Dennis is putting together a great package for me and Im down to the sub. Focal 165 compents in front no rears. Which would you chose....
CVR 12 Kicker of a KS arc audio. Any input is greatly appreciated. I dont listen to rap, just rock and roll and guitar song writer. If that helps. I know alot of guys go with the JL audio, where does that sit with the other two.
50% Install (Box, location)
30% Tuning (Crossover point, phase)
10% Proper Power
10% Subwoofer Choice
Everything equal, subs do sound different from one another. The ARC sub will sound better than the kicker sub.*
*I've only heard the ID built ARc subs, which were very, very good drivers. I'm not sure who is building them now, but I'd trust they wouldn't put their name on a bad sounding sub.
I'd go with the arc sub in a 10" and mount in the center cubby location - plenty of room.
A 12" sub in the vette will have a lot of pounding, wide bass where the 10" gives you a cleaner, punchier sound. If really like hip-hop or dance music, go with the 12"; if you like a wider variety of music or are more of a rock fan, go with the 10".
12 if you can fit it, why not? 10 is more convenient an install and more compatible with the smaller boxes.
why not a 12"?
Though a 12' will technically have more output and a bit lower Freq response (typically not usefull unless you are listening to very dynamics recordings of Classical or Jazz), a 10" sub will play well below what most modern recordings are doing espically in the realm of Rock, Pop, hip hip, rap, country ect.
As Kale mentioned they will also typically require .25 to .5 cu.ft. smaller enclosure.
I was thinking that a 12 might be overkill. So it sounds like the KS 10 is a better buy than the kicker CVR 10. Will the roof being back there hold up a lot of bass and then Im wishing I got the 12?
I would use the Arc 10 or 12 over any other sub in the price range or near it, period, ID and Arc are the only subs I have used in many years because they are one of the few with accurate reproduction.
ID engineered the Arc subs but Arc took over production at a local, yes US, facility to keep up with demand.
I have them in 4 installs and 4 ID 15s in my home system and two in my band room monster horn loaded system.
I have not tested the KS series, the KS mini amps are superb, the regular size is a dang fine amp for the cost....just never tested the KS subs.
So if I go with the arc 10 or 12. Do I get the 12 because Ill have more bass in reserve if I want it or go with the ten. If the 10 is going to be cleaner then maybe the 10. Any advice would be appreciated, so far people are saying go with the ten, but some say you have the room go with the 12.
I just did a complete install in my (dad's) 92 Vert. If I could have squeezed 12's I would have. I massaged 10's in there. Like you said, with a 12 it's there if you want it.
IMO you will be happy no matter what, but once in a while it's hilarious watching passengers laugh when a bass note vibrates their insides! Go 12!
I went single 12" IDQ in my vette is a custom 1/2" baltic birch stealth box made by Marv at about .78cu^3 (google marv's boxes, he makes great stuff). The magnet clears the hump in the cubby by about 1/4".
Sounds great, very accurate on 270w. Plenty of bass for Outkast to the Eagles and everything in between. I generally opt for moving more air. More cone area = more air
Just so everyone is aware if this has not been mentioned yet, Image Dynamics IDQ and ID max subs will likely not be the same as what most of you have and are accustomed to. the founder Eric Stevens recently had to walk away from the company due to conflicts with his partner over an attempted buy out (of the partner) ID is now completely controlled by Power Bass and these subs are likely not to be hand assemebled any longer, they will be mass assembled by machines in Tiawan or Korea somewhere. Thus reducing the build quality and tolerance specifications we are used to. (former ID fan and Competition Team member myself) and unfortunately unless you know the person you are buying the gear from you will not likely know if you are getting pre or post take over units.
That is one reason I sold out all my ID inventory right after this happened. I was on the phone with Eric on Sunday, he thought the buyout was finally going to happen on Monday, the partner tried to screw him again so he just walked away.
Many very very respected people in this industry and hobby will no longer buy from that company, I have seen many supporting posts for Eric and statements about not buying there.
