I have an 86 coupe that HAD a Bose system in it. The guy that had it before me put in an Sony CDX-R3300 head unit and used a Soundgate interface and the original Bose speakers. I took out the Bose speakers and removed the interface.I put in some nice 9x6 speakers. Now my system has no base and is very weak sounding. If I try to turn it up the sound breaks down. Is there something else I needed to do? I am using the existing wiring for the speakers. I did cut the amp wires for the Bose. Do I just need more power? Maybe a higher powered head unit?
Do you have any tips on where to hide the amp, how many watts, etc? And more importantly, the best way to run new wires. I'm a rookie and am going to attempt to do this myself. But then again, I may give way to someone more experienced.
Just run the front speaker wires from the doors through the rubber tube and into the kick panel. The rear speakers are even easier, just hide them behind the carpet panels.
For an Amp, just buy any quality brand (whatever you can afford), 4 channel with at least 50 watts RMS a channel (Not peak wattage) and you should be good. You could mount the amp behind the passenger seat or on MDF (medium density fiberboard, or particle board), glued with liquid nails or similar behind the rear cargo wall carpet.
Later on, you could add a subwoofer for more bass. You will also, need RCA cables and amplifier wires but, you can buy an Amp kit online or at any local audio store.
For better ideas, look at the Sticky on the top of Audio/Electronics section labled, "What do you run in your system"?...
I have everything I need now. Im ready to start, and have narrowed the amp location down to either behind the passenger seat or in the cargo area. My only problem is where do I find a good ground in either location? can I use the ground wire from the now abandoned Bose amp ground? Do I have to run one from the engine compartment? This is so different doing this on a fiberglass body...........I'm lost here.
