Stereo advice - Following 99HT recommendations
1) Add a powered sub or sub with amp to increase the bass response. (Likely JL stealthbox + amp & move the 12 disk changer)
2) Add tweeters to the A pillars in parallel with the rear speakers (surface mount with no drilling)
3) Replace the rear twiddlers with new 5.25" 2 ways with swivel tweeters
The recommendations I am looking for relate to;
1) Should I go with an amp that can be connected to drive the sub, as well as better power the new rear 2 ways & pillar tweeters
2) If I go this far should I proceed to replace the front 3.5" Bose twiddlers with matching 2 way as in the rear and try to power with the new amp. As for speakers this would leave the 8" subs with Bose sub amps running in the front. (if this is possible)
Any thoughts or suggestions.
If you are adding a rear sub amp and connecting it to the rear channel preamp outputs, then using a three channel amp will allow you to drive the new rear speakers. The poor placement of the rear Twiddlers will limit the effectiveness of pumping more power into them. I would be careful how much power you put into a 6.5 inch speaker though. The lack of a sealed enclosure for the rear speakers will lower the power rating of them.
You will be better off using pillar tweeters rather than replace the front 3.5 inch Twiddlers. They are poorly placed and thus new speakers won't do a lot better.
Stereo salesman are of course suggesting ditching the entire Bose system but how good or bad is the clean signal available from the Bose head unit. i.e. no use going to over board on the cost of the additional components (sub woofer, amp, rear speakers & A pillar tweeters) if the head unit signal, 8" Bose subs & 3.5" twiddlers, which are still running are going to be of such a different quality.
I would do the mods in steps. Start off with new 2 or 3 way speakers in the rear and a cheap set of tweeters connected in parallel with the front Twiddler wires, on the back of the HU.
The rear speakers will not get much bass due to the BSP, so pick new speakers with good midrange and highs. If you are not going to use a new amp to drive the rear speakers, then pick speakers with high efficiency that will sound loud on 15 wrms.
