I have a fairly new headunit in the dash of my 71 and I want to add some punch to my system. I have 2 new eclipse speakers in the dash and a small amp in right now. I want to add a rf cd changer withe the wired remote display. my question is for speekers and amp....I dont care about storage anymore, I just want real good sound. This is what I had in mind: 2 6x9's and a 10 sub all mounted in a custom box in the back compartment. And keep the dash speekers I have in now. Of course I need an amp too. Are component systems worth it or not? I only know the bare basics on sterios so any advice is appreciated. Should I run different speakers in the back or not...I can fit a 12 instead of a 10 but is it gona improve the sound.
thanks Kevin
Components instead of both 6x9 and if you are using them, 4x6 speakers. Oval speakers are not as good as round and don't sound very clean. The exception somewhat is 6x9. The worst offender is 4x10. People use 6x9s because they are able to give some bass. With a sub, you won't hear any of their bass so they would be wasting power on notes you can't hear. The components will instead make cleaner richer sound for the mids and tweets with the same power. You should, though it maybe different than my sister's old '80, be able to install components with the tweets in the dash, mids in the doors, and put components in the rear locations. Lastly, the C3 6x9 location is very shallow, not allowing most speakers to fit properly or giving non-component speakers enough air to work with. I would skip the RF changer and just get a new single disk deck with changer controls. You can get a pioneer for around $150. The sound will be dramatically better as the RF style CD changers only sound as good as the head units FM, which is usually pretty dismal cutting off the highs and bass for your sub. Hope this helps.
So for the best sound I should go for the component system with a sub in the rear and leave my 4x6's in the dash? The only reason I was thinking of a rf changer is because of my dash.. do you know if they sell kits to make a non **** style head unit fit cleanly in my current dash. I know Ill have to find a way to cut the cast aluminum which would probably be the hardest part. I just want to make sure it will fit nice in the dash.
I'd put components first in the front, with the mid in the door and the tweet where the 4x6 is. They make adapters. Then second, add rear components to fill in the sound. Then, you could either cut the dash with a dremel or talk to someone like RadioJoe for a deck that fits and looks stock but has changer controls built in.
