Default 1992 Corvette Bose CD/Cassette

First, I have to admit I have absolutely zero knowledge when it comes to car audio. Usually as long as the radio plays music I'm good.

So my question is this, a couple of my speakers are making a loud high-pitched sound, then they go into a garble type of sound, and then sometimes they work and sound normal and then other times they just don't make any sound at all. I also have a constant hissing type of sound from one of the speakers. Is this related to just the speakers themself? Or is it the amplifier that is at each speaker? Or is it the head unit?

Will this be fixed if I just buy a new set of speakers? Or should I do a full system (head unit + speakers). I just want to make sure I'm replacing the right parts.

Thanks!

Also, when I figure out what I need to replace, would you suggest letting Best Buy do the install? Or should I try to find a car audio specialist place to do the install?

Hello,
The first thing you need to do is read the C4 sticky at the top of the section. Lots of good info.
Yes, the amps in the speakers are going bad. If you decide to just get everything fixed, it would be smart to send your HU w/ the speakers. Dr Dons is the best place to send them, he can upgrade your HU to play CD-R's, and even give it a place to hook up an iPod.
If you decide to replace everything, you are looking at a lot of work and expense. I say this from experance. I replaced evry thing in my '90 twice, the second time it was perfect, but it took alot of work and $$$.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Randy

Thanks for your response!

So, what exactly would I need to do if I just want to replace the speakers with some Pioneers or something and then keep my Bose head unit?

I read the FAQ and couldn't really find what exactly would be needed to do this. Thanks in advance!

you would need an aftermarket amp to power them
