Guys: I have a 1986 and wanted to get a new head unit to replace the crappy one that someone tried before. Current head units don't match the resistance of the stock speakers, which have 10 ohms resistance. Anyone had any success with finding replacement 4" X 6" front speakers that fit in the dash? I tried some aftermarket and found that they were too deep to allow them to fit. The stockers are about 1.5" deep and my aftermarket were just over 2" deep. They won't allow the dash to fit back down into the car. Any alternatives that anyone knows of? Thanks!
I'm having the same problem. It's like whoever designed the car almost forgot that they had to fit front speakers in the dash pad! Here's what I just tried:
They are Sony Xplod XS-R4644 4" x 6" 4-Way speakers and are only 1.63 inches deep. However, apparently that .13 extra inches is just enough to where the dash pad doesn't fit perfectly back. While trying to push it back into place I cracked my dash pad a little. Once I finally got it to go in, the far ends (left and right) do not come down all of the way - almost, but there are gaps on the ends now (above the speedometer and breadbox thing). I will either see if I can adjust it to where it goes down a little more or return the speakers (if possible).
Sorry for the delay. I did find a solution. I bought some plastic from a stereo shop and made my own grill inserts to replace the factory fabric ones, which were faded to a blue color anyway. So I built my own grill inserts and then top-mounted my aftermarket 4" X 6". I had to buy some aftermarket grills from eBay ($10), as my speakers had NO grill covers. If you send me a PM or whatever that provides your e-mail, I will send you some pics. Again, sorry for the delay.
