Finally finished up the custom door panel pods to house a set of Hertz Hi-Energy 3-way components powered by a rockford fosgate amplifier. The panels were painted in body matching JetStream blue. These sound amazing to say the least!
No they should be ok without the grills as they are recessed pretty far, few inches.
As far as how we fabbed them, we simply removed the factory grille material, applied resin to that, sanded them down, made the rings for the speakers to mount from the back, more sanding and filler, cut holes in grille, filler, more sanding, more filler, more sanding, prime, sand then paint. Then it took some more sanding to get them to fit into the panels correctly. We also had to cut the factory speaker opening slightly larger where that mid sits otherwise the door panel would not go back on.
