Is there anything tricky here? I had a 9980 installed the end of last week by a shop. My car is at the Chevy dealer right now for no back up lights. The dealer says the body contol module is bad, and the connection to the 9980 backup camera is to blame. I will see what they say tomorrow when I pick up the car, and what they put down in writing as to the cause. Anyone know what might have gone wrong?
It doesn't matter what goes wrong with a car, if a dealer service tech sees ANY aftermarket electrical equipment installed then that's guaranteed to be the cause, regardless of if it is or not. If they change the bcm and the problem still isn't fixed, then they have some splainin to do.
Were the backup lights working at all between the install and now? I can't see how a proper install could damage the BCM, but if they did something screwy during the install it's possible they could have fried something.
It's also possible the installer used a wire tap that was just too small and cut through the wire completely, which a lazy troubleshooter may interpret as the bcm not passing voltage.
Thank you for all the replies! Mark, that's very helpful. That gives me things to consider as to how I am going to handle this. The dealer spent hours trouble shooting. $300 labor, unless the swap and programing was a lot of time. The car should be done today.
I can't say 100% sure when the back up lights failed, or if they have worked intermittently since the issue came up. I'll report back this eve what happens with the dealer today.
The dealer might charge me $98 labor, and $60 for the switch. If they charge me they are basically going to eat a lot of the labor charge since it was not diagnosed correctly. I am happy they were honest about it. I say might because they are going to try and get this under extended warranty, and I might pay nothing.
They said some kind of seal was bad at the reverse switch, and some transmision gunk got inside the switch and caused it to fail.
