Default Need advice with C4 Bose system

I was looking to put an after market head unit in my 88 coupe. I was considering a Kenwood unit. I'm not particularly happy with the Bose system in my car as far as sound quality. My question is will changing the head unit produce a noticable sound improvement out of the Bose speakers? I was thinking I would have to change the head unit and speakers at the same time however, if changing the head unit improved the overall sound quality to a very noticable level, I may have to re think my plans. Any input would be appreciated.

You are better off replacing everything with aftermarket. In the C4 each speaker has it's own amp and they do go out over time.
The rears will take 6x9"s as a direct fit, and the fronts will take 4".

When I did my C4, I modified the speaker boxes to take 5 1/4 and that made a nice difference.
One other thing I have seen, that I fixed on mine, is the HU will stick out quite a bit because there is a brace at the back. I cut it and the HU fit much better and looked a lot better.
I put my amp behind the passenger seat.

Thanks Grzlvt1. I guess this is what I thought was right but wanted to hear it from someone. What I was actually thinking of doing was to leave the stock speakers in place and buy a speaker box. I was going to make the box to fit in the rear. I then was going to buy speakers either a 6.5 inch or 6x9 inch woofer and a sperate tweeter to put into the box facing the back of the driver and passenger seats. In the compartment in the rear I was going to put an 8" to 10" sub. All the music would come from the rear this was I can leave the stock system in place without having to tear door panels off etc. Of course I would run new wire from the HU for the speakers in the back. My only concern doing this was if the sound would be adequate or deficient coming only from the back without sound coming from the front.

I personally think it would sound strange with the sound coming from the back. To put in new speakers in the door is not that difficult. Check out this Link
I do the opposite disconnect my rear speakers, personal preference but it sounds so much better.
