Default Help with system for '74

Before I get to the questions, let me give you a little background info to set the stage...
Last year I bought a '74 from another forum member--I've spent the intervening time fixing it up for me...it is not stock, and I'm ok with that (eg it has C5 seats). While I've got the dash off and what not, I wanted to redo the audio--nice, but not too pricey, if ya know what I mean...
I have an amp and sub which I plan to put in the back.
Question
#1 I need to replace the HU...I like Alpine, but am flexible. I'm looking for something with modern features (CD's, MP3, WMA, etc), but that will also fit the car (both literally and figuratively). Thoughts?
#2 I figure now is a good time to replace the original speakers...?
#3 I've never ordered audio equipment online and any recommendations on reputable sites would be welcome.
I've got a budget of about a grand (parts), though I could be persuaded if the case was strong enough...

well first off... do not cut the original gauge bezel. If you want to stay with the original then you can get a radio that fits perfectly here:

http://www.casmfg.com/Corvette_Radios.htm

Few places if any still make a unit that will fit well or even fit at all b/c of the shaft style. If your bezel is already cut you can put what ever you want into that single DIN slot or if you want to spend more then you can get a single DIN aftermarket bezel from a supplier for like $240.00. While you are at it and have the interior all mucked up and apart run two speaker lines and two RCA cables to the rear of the car in case the audio bug is not satisfied you can place an amp and speakers there too and not have to tear everything apart again!

The factory speakers should go for sure as they are more than likely worn out. The ones in the upper dash pad are 4x6 and should bolt right in. The ones in the kick panels can be made to fit a 4x6 but came with 4x10 if you had the stereo and not the mono system. Many other people cut the kick panel and make it to fit a number of other size round speakers... your choice.

hth,

Sully

thanks for the reply...sorry it took a bit to notice!
Looks like the bezel had already been cut, so I'm putting in a decent HU...working on the speakers as you mentioned...
...one last question...
I'd like to put a sub in the back (and prolly two amps, one for sub, one for front speakers)--anybody got any pics of how to make it fit, lol?

PS...Sully, just noticed your location...go hogs!
