I've been out of the audio scene for a long time, and I'm looking to install 2 Focal 6.5 components, and 2 5.25 coax. I have a JL Audio 10w3 sub, and I need to select an amp.
I was looking at the Alpine PDX-5 amp ... http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...ine-PDX-5.html .. but at $400, is there a better amp to power these speakers? Also, would it be better to go with 2 amps instead of one 5 channel amp? I'm not looking to shake the car next to me at a stop light with sound, only to sound great in the cabin at highway speeds with windows open.
I use two amps. JL C5-650 components and JL XR-525 coax powered by a 450/4v2 and a JL 10W3 powered with a 300/2v2. Takes up more room with the 2 larger amps than a 5 channel but I like the SQ of the A/B as opposed to the D. I also like having the extra power and headroom for the components/coax. I can also keep it cranked up to 11 w/o overheating with the JL amps.
I just installed a JL Audio HD900 5 channel in my Zo6 behind the passenger seat. I have Focal 3 way polyglass up front and 6.5 coaxial Bostons with steathbox in the rear. I like the convenience of having everything running off of one amp. The amp is a little pricey but for the size and power I think it is worth it.
NYC6, did you upgrade your alternator or have any issues with lights dimming when the amps are under a heavy load?
I understand the C6 is much better in that regard than C5's. No big three in mine and I play it very loud often. Still on the original battery(06) in cold NY winters. The car even sits in an ungeated garage for weeks at a time w/o ever having a tender on it. It lights off everytime I hit the start button. Dont know what year you have though.
a quick look and Im guessing you're installing in a 96? If so, I would do the big 3. IMO.
