I have a 98 with what I'm assuming is the standard head unit (after searching the forum for a while I'm also assuming the head unit is what I'm accustomed to calling a deck) with the bose speakers. I'll likely put a complete system in at a later date but want to replace the head unit now. I'm looking for a head unit that that installs relatively easy, has a usb port or some way to connect an iPhone, cd, dvd, and touch screen.
Any suggestions on head units that are somewhat easy to swap out and fit clean?
By the time you spend the money on the adapter to make a new HU (deck) work with the B(l)ose, you could have a nice set of 6.5" components up front... or at least some cheap co-ax's.
If you are set on getting a touch screen, then you're looking at doing a double DIN conversion from 1.5 DIN. That's quite the upgrade/change to make, and if it were me, I'd save my money until I could afford to do it all at the same time.
Most touch screen double DIN's are CD and DVD, most today have built in iPod support too. What's your overall budget? Do you want navigation? Dennis at DD Mods (C5 Bears Fan) has the info on all the new Kenwood and Pioneer decks that are coming out, and can help you get your bezel modified as well as get you the wiring harnesses you need. Good luck.
So after reading your post and others on the forum, I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to opt for an entire new system. My budget is approximately $2k all of a sudden. It doesn't have to be touchscreen and navigation is not a must, but I'm not against it.
I'll check out Dennis at DD Mods. Thanks for the advice. Looks like it's going to be a project. Already did the clutch and tranny so I think I'm up to it. Just need to carve out some time.
