Sounds like you guys are really up on these bose systems. I have problem with my 92. I have developed a very loud and obnoxious “shrill” out of the rear speakers, it’s VERY loud and percing. It first started in the left speaker, then the right. It’s volume is independent of the volume control setting, it has a mind of it’s own, it comes and goes, but seems linked to the temperature, when cold out, it works fine, when hot out, it’s there for sure, and when temp is moderate it’s intermittent. I’ve pulled the rear speaker covers/grills and unplugged them. Locals have told me that the “rear speaker amps?” are the problem, and that I should get new ones.
Any suggestions based on the symptoms? Thanks in advance
Re: Problems with 92 Bose..... suggestions? (66427-450)
just like clockwork...seems like the Bose systems seem to last about 10 years and then putz in one way or another......for my 91 it was the CD player refusing to play fair....I believe some guys have been replacing the amps but the long term solution, which is what I chose (Based on some great info from forum members), was to ditch the entire bose system and start new :)
Re: Problems with 92 Bose..... suggestions? (66427-450)
Two choices: Ditch the ENTIRE system or rip the amps out and replace all of the electrolytic caps on it. I had one amp start that s^#t but about $4 in caps cured its woes. I figure when the head unit dies, I'll replace the entire system.
Re: Problems with 92 Bose..... suggestions? (66427-450)
I'm almost afraid to post this, since there are so many folks out there that dislike the Bose system but I happen to prefer leaving everything stock in my car so here goes - I had the head unit rebuilt (solved the CD eating a disk and not returning it on "eject" command) and have replaced all the electrolytic caps on the rear pc boards. The cap replacement job was a PITA. The PC pads are way small and plated through holes on the board making it a challenge to remove and replace the components without scorching the board. If you don't know what you're doing with a soldering iron in your hand you had best get some help. I figured while I was at it I would replace all the caps on both boards - cost me about $15 for the rear boards. The values you need are 2 ea. 820uf @ 16vdc. (tough to find, I used 1,000uf @ 16vdc), 2 ea. 47uf @ 16vdc, 2 ea 1uf @ 50 vdc, 3ea 10 uf @ 16 vdc and 1ea 4.7 uf @ 35 vdc. I found all the correct values at a local electronics shop - it was tough getting the right voltage ratings & physical sizes to fit the board. Long story short it all worked, solved the problems and sounds great IMHO.

Re: Problems with 92 Bose..... suggestions? (Topload)
Thanks Topload. that was the level of detail i was looking for. i also want to maintain and use the original Bose set-up. So there are at least 2 of us :-)
Re: Problems with 92 Bose..... suggestions? (66427-450)
If you are happy with the bose, that's fine. I usually tell people to ditch it because the sound compared to anthing made within the last 10 years stinks and it is 100% reversible with no modifications, wire cutting, etc. Most people keep it for shows only.
Re: Problems with 92 Bose..... suggestions? (92TripleBlack)
I may have to look into a conversion, my CD player just went belly-up this past weekend, now i need to fix the amps, and the CD player. Does someone sell a complete kit (all the stuff needed to convert?)
Re: Problems with 92 Bose..... suggestions? (66427-450)
I have also been recently consternating over whether to keep the stock Bose or change to something else. The Bose systems are actually not that bad except that time and heat kills the electrolytic caps. Have to agree with Triple Black that technology has improved since '92, however, all the aftermarket stuff looks cheesy in the dash. The orange clashes with just about everything else. Sooo..I have decided to give the venerable Bose one last chance. I have already replaced the caps in 2 amps, and will purchase caps to do the rest. Also sent the tuner/preamp for repair. Altogether, I should have about $125 in the repair, and replacement was going to be around $800 to $1000. One hint on purchase of caps, get the high temp ones or you will be right back to square one in a couple of years.
