I wanna mount some good quality speakers in the rear of my 1997 C5 coupe to match the ones I have up front - 6.5" CDT HD-63 (which sound awesome by the way).
The problem is I have very limited room on the drivers side with the gas tank filler in the way -- not enough mounting depth. I would LOVE to mount another pair of HD-63's there but their is no way that I can see to do it. Does anyone know if there a way I can mod the rear speaker area to give me more room?
If not, is there are slim style speaker that would give me good quality sound that would fit? I'd sure hate to buy some nice expensive speakers just to find out that I can't get 'em to fit...
I'm sure someone has ran into this issue before and found a good solution...
I think most will advise against rear speakers altogether for better staging of sound, however for fill a nice set of coaxials should fit easily. I dropped an old set of Boston Acoustics Pro65's in the back that I just had laying around to replace the crap Bose, they fit no problem and sound 100 times better (albeit just got them running off HU power)
Are you sure they won't fit? The only model specific speakers I can remember having in the rear of my C5 coupe are Infinity Kappa's, they show mounting depth of 3.25" and I remember them fitting just fine. The HD-63 only shows mounting depth of 2.75".
IIRC, you should be able to put at least 1/4" of spacers between the speaker and oem speaker mount to move the speaker closer to the grill. You may even get closer to 1/2".
Thanks for the suggestions guys, maybe I had one too many budwiesers when I was doing my test fitting Looks like I'll hafta do some more checking. I'll check out spacers, maybe I can get away with just using some 1/2 inchers.
Yea, I think I'm in the minority when it comes to having rear speakers. I just like having that full sound all around me.

Not necessarily...some of us "old farts" like the "surround sound" effect of a good 4 speaker set-up. FWIW, I had a pait of 2 way Kenwoods left over from another car, that I used in the rear of my C-5.

I'm having a dickens of a time deciding what to do in my FRC. All the sound comes out at my feet and I have some cheap Infinity 5.25 in the rear and it just doesn't cut it for me. I have some JBL 6.5 in the front and really like them but it's not enough.
Thought about mounting some 6x9's in my partition but then it would ugly up the trunk area. Then I thought about just adding a sub so my base can be heard above my exhaust. But I'm old school and most of the music I listen to doesn't warrant a sub, or the music was never recorded in that manner, and that makes a big difference. thought about going to 6x9 in the front but then what to do with my 6.5, don't want to waste them.
I'm open to suggestions that doesn't break the bank. I would like to have a high end system but I feel I can have a nice sounding system without going high end. High end is nice, but not really necessary if all you want is a nice sounding system for listening to music.

I fall some between young-un and old fart and I prefer the sound of the four way setup in my c6.
6.5" speakers will fit with a 3/4" speaker ring (i used Alpine SPX) A coax speaker with a smaller magnet might be able to get away with a 1/2" or 1/4" spacer.
