Anyone familiar with GM SWC? I sent my Kenwood 6960 back for warranty work because I kept losing SWC function. The service center called and could find no issues. They think my factory swc may be the issue.
Anyone know how to test gm swc system and or replace same?
SWC is pretty simple. Radio supplies +12vdc on pin A6 of C1, each button has a specific resistance, radio measures current at pin A7 to determine which button has been pushed.
Best (only ?) way to test would be with an ohm meter across pins A6-A7.
I was having an occasional issue with 'volume up' not working in my '07 after installing AVIC HU. I eventually realized it was only happening on hot days when the car had been parked in the sun for a while. My theory was that the resistance of the top button changed enough after heating up in the sun so that the SWI didn't recognize it as a button push. After 10 minutes of driving with the A/C on the button would always start working again. I did a retrain of the SWI on a hot day and the problem went away.
we replaced his SWI once already, same issues before and after. I even made sure to program with car running to make sure it wasnt a voltage/resistance issue
Dave can prly give more details as to what exactly is happening
The SWC are setup in a voltage ladder configuration. I built a comparator circuit to interface with the SWC to control up 32 functions using the SWC and paddle shifters (also a voltage ladder). However, I used 5v instead of 12v, so if you want to check out the actual controls supply 5v to A6 and measure the voltage on A7 and I can then tell you if that switch cluster is working properly. You will need to make sure the backlighting circuit is grounded as well.
I am no authority on electronics. What has happened, ig Pentavolvo did my install of my 6960 with SWC. It worked fine for a while but eventually I started losing swc function after driving the car for say 20-30 minutes. Dennis @ DoubleD and Greg both agreed to repalce the SWC at no cost to me. Greg even went a step further during the reinstall as he documented. The changes seemed to be better but I wasn't taking long trips while car was in storage. I have a iPod, a Touch and a Nano and the same problem with all 3 players.
I pulled the car out of storage and same pattern returned with me driving the car and SWC functions quit working. I bought another 6990 from DoubleD and the problem did show up once with the 6990 but I think that issue may have had more to do with my old 3rd gen iPod Video. I put a Nano in it's place and no troubles since.
I sent the 6960 to a Kenwood service center. They said there was no issue with the SWC that they could find. Not sure how hard they looked as the radio was also displaying the BSOD periodically when any of the iPods lost video signal and the until would lock up.
which leads me back to my original question; is there something in the GM harness or SWC that could be the root of my issue?

TIA.
No, the SWC are nothing but passive components (resistors and LEDs). Unless the a piece of the bose is still in the mix, or you have one of the after market do dads that allow you to keep the chimes and buzzers, there shouldn't be anything GM causing this.
