Re: Dash kit Questions (marthpodi)
1. Are they all the same? (Will they all work for my '89 'vette?)
Nope, when I installed the Rckford radio I got one kit that was rounded and did not interfere with the trim installation. After it was stolen I went back to get the same kit but they gave me a different one because the rounded one was not in stock. This one has square edges and severely interferes with the trim installation.
2. What kind should I get for a standard H.U. (Pioneer, Sony, etc.)
I don't have my receipt for the one that works, only thing I would do is make sure you can take it back if it does not work.
3. Where can I get one from?
I got mine from a local stero installation shop, it was less than $20. Better quality than the ones you get at Walmart, etc.
For a wiring harness adapter use the GM-01 kit you can find at Walmart. Its about $6 and if you are replacing all your speakers it is the way to go.
I removed the bose enclosures in my doors, made a mounting plate out of some scrap wood, cut a hole in it to fit some 5 1/2" round speakers, used the screws from the enclosures to mount them. When I replaced the door panel I re-used the bose speaker covers and it looks good.
Crutchfield has wrong information. It will cause more problems than solutions.
No, they are't 4" speakers. If you have the earlier interior, you have dash and door speakers. Dash is up to 4x6 and door is up to 6.5 but 5.25 fits.
If you have the later interior, they are 5.25 in the frame rails with custom up to 6.5
The rest jaa1988 has covered.
You can also purchase a replacement dash piece. Mine was $35. I filed it to work with my deck and saved the original. Both are GM original pieces. This way you can revert easily if you want to.
Where'd you get the dash kit from? I have speakers in the back, in the doors, and in the dash. I have no idea how to replace the dash speakers, I think they're still in there. I'm starting to lean toward professional installation.
Bose system doesn't have dash speakers, so if they're there, they are part of the aftermarket system your previous owner put in. I believe you have to remove the dash cover to get at them because the grilles don't pop out.
We all have 'em. I'm thinking of putting the tweeters in there for my front components, although I prefer the idea of tucking them under the dash like Kale has done with his, or mounting them to the A-pillar. Anyway, think of them as an optional place to add speakers... it's a bonus, included by GM in your ride at no extra charge.
Wish I had dash locations on mine. I have to build custom pods to fit in between the dash and A pillar from fiberglass now.
Great location for component tweeters and very stealthy.
Metra, schoshe, etc. They all make kits. You need to look at them to see which one looks best to you. Afterall, you're the one that's gotta look at it for the next few years.
