I just replaced my head unit with a Kenwood DNX-6990HD and the front and rear speakers with Infinity Kappa's in my 2000 FRC. I didn't mess with the stock Bose 8" subs in the doors. I've read on here before that the stock Bose system sucks, but I thought by replacing the speakers and head unit that I'd be getting better sound. Simply put, it sounds muffled and flat no matter what kind of settings I adjust with the head unit. Is there any replacement for the subs or am I stuck with adding a sub in the trunk? It seems like even the Infinity's aren't meeting their potential. Any ideas?
If you want it to sound better you're pretty much stuck with going to aftermarket amp and sub/speakers.
If you're going to do the sub, you may as well yank all of the oem door stuff and put in a component set. One bridgeable 4-channel amp can power it all, the center tub in C5 is perfect for a sub and the amp can easily be mounted on the rear vertical wall.

I was afraid that was the case. I guess I'll be saving up for some upgrades then

Good advice from markcz, who is an expert on this stuff, but I would recommend a very slight change.
Since you already have installed Infinity Kappas in front and back, I would suggest a five-channel amp instead.
I think Mark was thinking that you would run the front two off two of the four channels and then bridge the remaining two for the sub. The back speakers would be left on the HU.
I have the same setup that Mark recommended but I wish I had gone to a five-channel. Front on two channels, back on two channels and then a dedicated sub channel for your subwoofer.
