Some time ago i completely ripped out my whole stock system in my C6 and built one from scratch with amps and sub. I had pricey 6x9s in the lower door and 3.5s in the upper door. This set up sounded awesome. I ran it for a long time but since most audiophiles despise 6x9s i thought i must be missing something and replaced them with component 6.5s and also got rid of the 3.5s to make room for the tweeter. The new setup has great mid-range but it seems i lost a lot in the upper range presumably because i got rid of the 3.5s. I am seriously considering going back to the original configuration with the 6x9s and 3.5s. Am i missing something? Do i just need to tune my system? Are 6x9s really sub-par to 6.5s even though my 6x9s were some of the best you could buy? They sounded great.
Original Configuration:
Alpine Head Unit CDE-123
Door: Polk DB6950s 3-way 6x9s with crossover; 3.5" JL TR350 co-axial (driven by head unit)
Rear: Polk Audio DB521 co-axial
Sub: 8: Polk MM
Amp1: 4ch. EA4000 eclipse 75Wx4 (DRIVES 6x9s and 5.25"s)
Amp2: 2ch EA2000 eclipse 150W (drives 8" Polk MM)
The only way I would run a 6x9 in the door with 3.5" co-ax speakers is with an active setup where the 6x9 delivers bass/lower mid range only. Maybe crossed over at 300~500 HZ? That way you get the low end and midbass punch, but they don't interfere with the 3.5" drivers.
