Well I have a Pioneer, but anyway I put the Nav ant on top of the duct for the center air vents, if you close you can see it in the pic, it works great and is simple to install. My mic is located right above my right knee it's attached to the center console right below the dash it's also easy to install and works good.

So the nav ant doesn't have to be on top of the dash?? I thought if it was under the dash, behind the console there would be too much interference... If that's the case then I'm so glad I asked cause I would never have thought to put it there!!!

Nope, gps signals will penetrate thin layers of non-metallic materials. Look at the casing itself... is that a plastic housing? (<--yep) Just don't burry it deep or mount it under metal.

thanks guys!! I'm in the middle of the install now. I'm putting antenna exactly where yours is and see if its as good as yours is. All wiring harnesses connected and heat shrunk, gmos-04 in place and faceplate bracket just put on radio. Time for the fun, wish me luck!! lol i'll post some pics when i'm done....

I'm getting 5 out of 5 bars of signal strength from the nav antenna mounted on top of the vent, and that's in my garage!!! If it wasn't for you guys I would have put that ugly (but pretty small) antenna on top of my dash thinking it had to go there. Lots of tweaking to do but so far so good....

Glad it's going good, by the way I put my sat radio right next to GPS and it works great.

In OK (center of the country) it will prob get better reception than out here on the coast.

Instead of putting the sat antenna on the vent, at least move it up to the center speaker grill. Lately I've been double-sticky taping it to the frame near the center speaker. Directly under the grill, so out of sight, and gets much better reception than if under the speaker. I'll have to take a few pics of the next one.

So I'm in StL and over the vent is NOT working for me. I get cut out at least a few times an hour unless driving on highway in the middle of nowhere. The worst part is that it happens often enough that I'm always waiting for it - not pleasant really.

This is not to suggest that YOU shouldn't do it, but just wanted to add another person's experience to the poll.

MARKCZ, few questions if you don't mind...

1. could you perhaps elaborate a bit more on your new location by center speaker - photos ? I'd like to still try and keep it out of sight if at all possible.

2. do you happen to know if I could actually reach the receiver with my hand (it's mounted on the vent just like posted above) from the front speaker cutout on top of dash? This is to avoid having to remove the front bezel and other requisite parts. I've removed it quite a few times since owning the car, and hate to do it any more than absolutely necessary. I did make sure I left enough wire to reach the speaker location, should this move become necessary.

3. It is my understanding that the speaker grill is attached with 4 clips, and I believe I know where they're located. Just curious if you have any special tips at removal that wouldn't be obvious by just looking at it.

Thanks everyone for a very timely thread for me,

Stu

that grille is held in place by 4 or 5 clips. Just pry up the two outermost ends on the wide part, and the two outer ends on the thinner part, and there maybe one more clip in the center of the wide part, im not sure cause its been a while but there are pics of that part on the forum somewhere... As far as reaching the antenna, i think thats going to be tough because after removing the grille and speaker you have to reach in there a few inches forward and with the windshield there its probably not going to work. Ive never tred it though, just gong by the numerous times ive taken the radio bezel and speaker grille off... good luck

I don't have any pics handy, but it's easy to see on your car.

Once the grill is out you'll see the framework that it sits on and the speaker is attached to. I use double sticky tape to attach the new sat antenna to that framework in a spot that it won't get in the way of one of the retaining clips. If you're not using the center speaker for anything I'd remove it (that big magnet can't be good for reception)

There's a thread for center speaker removal with some good pics of how to pop off the grill. I doubt anyone could get their hand down to the vent with just the grill removed, IIRC it isn't even that easy to run the antenna up there from the inside.

Verdict:

I fabricated a metal bracket to mount utilizing the 2 front-most speaker screws, so the receiver sits right over the vent openings, dead center.

full signal in the garage, and everywhere I drove - no cut-outs.

works like a charm now
