I have a system in my truck but I dont know the first thing about audio. I'm more of the mechanical type. I can take a vette apart and put it back together. ( I did it once and the vette runs perfect). Anyways, the stereo in my vette right now is aftermarket but is poopie none the less. It is just a tuner, does not even have a tape deck. I am wanting to install a cd player. One problem with the current stereo is that I can turn it to a station that I like and save it into the memory. But If I turn the car off and then back on again, the memory is lost and none of my stations are on there anymore. Will a new cd deck fix this or is there something wrong in my wiring that I need to fix?
There should be a constant 12 volt source to the head unit... I dont think it would work otherwise.. probably just the unit you have... A new deck would definately be a good idea:
It's sounds like someone has wired the HU's Red and Yellow wires together to the accessory power. Usually yellow is "constant" 12 volts and red is "turned on" 12 volts. Seperating the 2 should do the trick and keep any memory alive.
You probably have a blown fuse. Radios need two power hookups. Ignition and constant+. The ignition tells the radio to turn off when the key goes off and provides the power for it to work. The constant powers the radio's memory and clock and uses minimal energy.
You probably have a blown fuse. The radio constant is usually connected with another item like the lighter, dome light, horn, etc. that is always available. Check your fuses. If the radio is not stock, then the wire is probably not hooked up.
Adding a CD will be fine. It won't fix the reason the constant wire is out though.
Put in the correct fuse and see if it blows. If it does, you probably have a problem somewhere else in the system that needs addressing. An afermarket radio should have no effect on the fuse but something like foglights, etc. can cause a problem. Also, if you have other aftermarket electronic equipment, they may be the culprit.
